Obama Brings us Together

Dry Bones, Kirschen,Israel, Iran, Egypt, Hamas, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Obama, nukes, middle East, mid east, Sunni, Shia,
According to a recent report:
Popular Egyptian TV host urges Israel to attack Iran.
"The Obama administration has so effectively alienated the Arab World’s Sunni Muslim regimes in states like Egypt and Saudi Arabia that they are turning to Israel to see their interests looked after. Now that’s a legacy achievement. “Our dear friend [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu,” Okasha began, “please.”

“Iran faces you and the Bushehr reactor faces you,” he added. “Put your trust in God and bomb it.”

“We are with you and if you need fuel for the jets, we will give it to you,” he continued.

Okasha, while perhaps not representative of the Egyptian people, is often representative of the government in Cairo led by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. His personal antipathy toward Hamas and the deposed Muslim Brotherhood is well-documented.

“I swear here, on live television, I will break the law and go to his home in the fifth district [of Cairo] and hang him on Bab Zuweila,” Okasha said of Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk in September. The monument to which he referred is a famous ancient gate to the city of Cairo.

Okasha’s colorful nature aside, his apparent endorsement of an Israeli strike on Iranian targets is reflective of an unspoken but apparent alliance of necessity between the region’s Sunni dictators and the Israeli state as Iranian influence expands across the Middle East.

“The Israeli prime minister’s public confrontation with President Barack Obama over the U.S. administration’s pursuit of a nuclear bargain with Iran may have drawn all the spotlight this week,” The Wall Street Journal reported in early March. “But America’s other key allies across the Middle East—such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates—are just as distraught, even if they lack the kind of lobbying platform that Benjamin Netanyahu was offered in Congress.”" -more

Boston Bombing

Dry Bones,Israel, America, middle east policy, Obama, mid east, Middle East, terror, terrorism, boston, marathon, western democracy, society It never seems to stop. Yes, our societies, towns, and cities survive. Yes, we are strong. We bounce back. But for the victims, their bodies torn apart, limbs blown off, for the dead and their families and those who loved them. For all of these it will never be over.

Theirs is a life sentence.

Presidential Problems

Dry Bones,Israel, America, middle east policy, Obama, mid east, Middle East, syria, iran, turkey, peace, economy, depression, financial crisis, recession, president, presidential visit, Permit me to say few words about today's cartoon from a cartoonist's point of view.
When I began doing Dry Bones cartoons back in 1973, I drew six panels in every cartoon. A few years ago I switched to a four panel structure. Today's cartoon could/should have been a two-panel cartoon, but I wanted the tempo and pacing provided by a four panel "read". Which explains the four panel background in a two panel. That's the kind of problem that a cartoonist tries to solve.

The kind of problems that an American President is called upon to "solve" are, as pointed out in today's Dry Bones cartoon, a bit more challenging.

Kerry expected to play pivotal role in any Mideast talks
"WASHINGTON — "Secretary of State John F. Kerry is playing a backstage role as President Obama meets this week with senior Israeli and Palestinian leaders on the first foreign trip of his second term. But once the initial excitement of the presidential trip subsides, it will be up to Kerry — who has a deep reservoir of credibility with both adversaries in one of the region’s most intractable disputes — to try to build momentum and jump-start long-stalled peace talks, according to American, Israeli, and Arab specialists."-more

Presidential Visit

Egypt, President, Presidency, Obama, Elections, Mosry, Peace, Jerusalem, Middle East, mid east, , kirschen : Dry Bones cartoon.According to Israel HaYom:
Lieberman invites Morsi to Jerusalem

"A surprising invitation was extended to Cairo on Tuesday, when Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman suggested that Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi visit Israel, while speaking at a legal conference in Tel Aviv. Lieberman expressed his pleasure at hearing Morsi's statements in a recent interview in which he reassured Egypt's neighbors that they need not worry about Egyptian forces in Sinai.

"I was happy to hear President Morsi speak about his commitment to peace with Israel, the Camp David Accords and fighting terrorism," said Lieberman. "This is very important news; but those who talk about peace and stability must also understand that it is not just a hypothetical idea. Peace has tangible aspects to it, too. It is not a telepathic connection. This is why we hope to see President Morsi receiving Israeli delegates. We want to see him give interviews in the Israeli media and we want to see him in Jerusalem as President Peres' guest."-more
