Another Holiday

Sukkot, or “the Feast of Tabernacles,” is the third major Jewish holiday in the Hebrew month of Tishrei.
The first was Rosh Hashanah, the second was Yom Kippur.
This year, the week-long Sukkot holiday begins begins at sundown on Friday, September 29 2023, and ends at nightfall on Friday, October 6, 2023.

The Feast of Tabernacles

The Feast of Tabernacles? That's what Christians call Sukkot.

In Zechariah 14:16, the prophet predicts the future saying that “Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.” And so, fulfilling Biblical prophecy, thousands of Christians from around the world come to Jerusalem every year to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
Events include a Jerusalem march of Christian supporters of Israel from around the world.

His Victory Tour

What was to be a humiliating trip to the U.S. for Netanyahu (long uninvited to the White House) was somehow finessed into a kind of victory tour.

The opening event with Elon Musk was a triumph, and potentially, was the birth of a new partnership to face the challenges and opportunities of the fast-evolving future of Artificial Intelligence.
The Prime Minister's UN speech was classic Bibi.

When asked about "Normalization" with the Saudis, Netanyahu assured interviewers that it was a sure thing. And he did so with such a twinkle in his eye that I wondered if an agreement between Bibi and MBS had already been reached, in secret.

Unwanted: RFK Jr

55 years ago I was a delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Like other delegates, I had been elected in a Primary Election to represent the Democrats of the congressional district in which I lived.

Once at the convention, I witnessed the exciting negotiations, coalition-building, and horse-trading that went on between delegates and delegations. A process which, in the end produced a Presidential candidate.

It was democracy alive and in action. There were no “superdelegates.” No top-down control. And the possibility of a candidacy like RFK Jr’s being denied would have been unthinkable.

Waiting for the "verdict" from Israel's Supreme Court Judges reminded me of an old comedy routine called "Here Comes the Judge" by a vaudeville comedian named Pigmeat Markham. The High Holidays start with Rosh Hashanah, which begins this Friday evening, September 15 2023, and ends at sundown on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

I'm forever getting into arguments with otherwise knowledgeable Jews in Israel who claim that Rosh Hashanah marks the date on which the World was created. Wrong! Rosh HaShanah marks the date of the creation of Adam and Eve and counts the 5784 years since that Biblical event.

On the other hand it's hard to find a Jew here in Israel who would argue with my low opinion of the UN.

Corona Replay

A new COVID-19 variant, BA.2.86, has been discovered. The World Health Organization is now tracking it and is calling it "Pirola." Outside of Israel, it has been detected (so far) in at least seven different countries, namely the US (where First Lady Jill Biden tested positive),the UK, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Portugal, and South Africal.

Scientists predict that this "outbreak" will be less severe than when the Alpha, Delta or Omicron variants spread because most people on Earth have now been vaccinated and/or infected by the virus.

Electrifying News

Israel is to commence building a 150-kilometer (93-mile) undersea electricity cable that will run along the Mediterranean coast from Ashkelon in the south to Haifa in the north.

The cable will transmit electricity produced by solar energy fields in Israel’s southern cities across the country.

Connecting Israel’s electricity network to power grids in Europe via Cyprus and Greece will follow.

The Joke's on us!

Putting the simple statement in the mouth of the shocked newsguy who's reading it gets a cartoon laugh.

But it exposes the fact that we have all (or most of us) been ignoring an unacceptable reality. The quaint, friendly old neighborhoods of southern Tel Aviv have been turned into “no-go” zones dominated by illegal migrants.

Perhaps the political street battle that erupted between Eritreans on Saturday and was plastered across our TV screens will prompt demands that the government finally do what needs to be done to save the city.

The annual UN Security Council vote to renew UNIFIL's mandate in Lebanon has taken place. After a debate between France (whose draft resolution limited UNIFIL's freedom of movement) and the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates (who opposed the limitation) UNIFIL was renewed. For another year.

Meanwhile, an increasingly belligerent Hezbollah, a puppet of the Iranian Mullahs, continues its threatening moves on Israel's northern border.
