Gaza with no weapons or missiles?

 Here is a Dry Bones Cartoon from back in 2009. It is still true today.

It amazes me that I can find cartoons of Yaakov's so easily that still fit the current state of affairs.

I am sending you all an early Shabbat Shalom, as I am leaving very early tomorrow (Friday morning) to Jerusalem for a few days to attend the wedding of a very good and long time friend of Yaakov's. She, and her husband to be, were a super help to me when Yaakov passed away. They immediately came down from Jerusalem, and helped me through dealing with the hospital, and the morgue and the burial society and the funeral. I was a mess, and, of course totally inexperienced with all of the procedures. I owe them so much and I am so happy to be able to celebrate with them now.

I am taking the train, and not taking my computer with me, and also I am staying with another very good old friend that I have not seen in a few years. So... wishing you all blessings and only good things and Shabbat Shalom.

Building the New Middle East

I am having a difficult time posting for the blog lately. It is not hard to find good cartoons, but it is hard for me emotionally to go through them. Also, the world situation is such a mess. I would rather skip watching any news these days. But I feel that I need to keep up with current events to be able to choose relevant cartoons. I think this is a very good one.

Feeding the Crocodile

The whole world seems to have turned against the Jews and Israel, so much more than I would have imagined possible. I wish that Yaakov was here to do cartoons for us. 

The Israeli Cartoonists association is honoring him this week with an exhibit of his cartoons at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque and will have a small ceremony there on Friday morning. 

They are showing about 25 of his cartoons, plus a few cartoons that Israeli cartoonists did in tribute when he passed away.

Tisha B Av

Sunday, August 3rd is the holy day of Tisha Be'Av ("the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av"). Tisha Be'Av commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and the subsequent exile of the Jews from the Land of Israel. The day also commemorates other tragedies which occurred on the same day, including the Roman massacre of over 100,000 Jews at Betar in 132 CE. Instituted by the rabbis of 2nd-century Palestine, Tisha B'Av is regarded as the saddest day in the Jewish calendar and a day which is destined for tragedy. -more

Our sages tell us that the reason for the destruction of the Temple was "Sinat Chinam" (Hebrew for the baseless hatred and divisiveness that often divides us.)

Outrage

As Israel changes gov'ts it is hit with the latest Palestinian outrages, which includes Jerusalem bombings and the terrorists (apparently from Islamic Jihad) who stormed a hospital in Jenin, disconnected an 18 year-old Israeli Druze from life support and kidnapped him. Palestinian sources have indicated that the boy’s body is now being held in the Jenin Refugee Camp.

The UN has voted to send an international war crimes probe to Gaza after the body’s leading human rights official slammed Israel’s reaction to protests along the border as “wholly disproportionate”. According to Newsweek:

Jewish people celebrating LGBT Pride in Chicago were told not to display Star of David flags because other people found them ‘offensive.’ The Jewish Star of David flag was banned from the city’s annual Dyke March celebrations, and several people carrying the flag were removed form the march because their presence “made people feel unsafe,” LGBT paper Windy City Times reported. 

The Dyke March is described by organizers as being a "more inclusive, more social justice-oriented" march than the city's main Pride parade. One marcher, Laurel Grauer, said she was harassed by other Dyke March attendees before being told she needed to leave with her flag. “It was a flag from my congregation which celebrates my queer, Jewish identity which I have done for over a decade marching in the Dyke March with the same flag," she told Windy City Times. “They were telling me to leave because my flag was a trigger to people that they found offensive,” she added. “Prior to this [march] I had never been harassed or asked to leave and I had always carried the flag with me.” 

The organizers of the march told the Times the event was a pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist one and that the flags made people feel unsafe. The Star of David also features on the Israeli flag, with many believing support for Israel is tantamount to supporting the oppression of the Palestinian people. Israel’s own backing of LGBT rights has been described as ‘pinkwashing,’ with the authorities there accused of using gay rights to detract from the ongoing conflict with Palestine. 

However, the decision to prevent people from displaying their Jewish Pride flags did not go down well with some marchers. "This is not what this is community is supposed to be about," marcher Ruthie Steiner told the Times after seeing people thrown out because of their Jewish Pride flags. "I'm German-born. Am I pinkwashing by being here and supporting my community? Is every nation which does not have a clean civil-rights record and also hosts a Pride parade guilty of pinkwashing? With all the people that so hate the LGBTQ community, for it to tear itself apart in self-hatred makes no sense at all,” she added

Hamas in Tel Aviv Ramadan Attack

According to Israel National News:

UN chief 'shocked' that Hamas praised Tel Aviv attack
UN Secretary-General condemns Tel Aviv terrorist attack, criticizes Hamas for praising it.

“The Secretary-General condemns tonight’s terrorist attack in Tel Aviv in which at least four Israelis were killed by Palestinian assailants and another four injured. He conveys his condolences to the families of the victims and the Government of Israel,” said a statement issued on behalf of the UN chief’s spokesperson.
“The Secretary-General reiterates that there is no justification for terrorism nor for the glorification of those who commit such heinous acts,” added the statement.
“The Secretary-General is shocked that the leaders of Hamas have chosen to welcome this attack and some have chosen to celebrate it. He calls upon the Palestinian leadership to live up to their responsibility to stand firmly against violence and the incitement that fuels it.”

Palestinian Arabs took to the streets and celebrated the Tel Aviv attack.
Palestinians in Tulkarem were seen handing out candy to passing cars in celebration of the attack, while senior Hamas terrorist and the deputy leader of the group, Ismail Haniyeh, praised the murderous attack and called the terrorists "heroes" on his Twitter account.
Hamas later wrote on Twitter that the terrorist attack was a “heroic operation” and added, “This is the first surprise in store for the Zionist enemy during Ramadan.”

Bus Bombing in Jerusalem

Just four days before Passover, a bomb exploded on a bus in Jerusalem, injuring over 20 people as it and other vehicles were engulfed in flames.

Palestinian Schoolkid "Hero"

According to the Investigative Project on Terrorism:

Palestinian Father, Social Media Praise Terrorist Who Murdered Israeli Mother
A mother of six is targeted by a Palestinian terrorist and stabbed to death Sunday. His father's reaction is not one of horror or shame.
"I am proud of him," the father of Murad Bader Abdullah Adais told Palestinian media, reports Israel National News.
Adais fatally stabbed Meir at the entrance of her house in the town of Otniel, south of Hebron, while three of six children were home. Meir's initial struggle with Adais forced him to flee the scene, perhaps saving her children from the attacker. Following an intense manhunt, Israeli authorities arrested Adais Tuesday morning.
A Palestinian news website – QudsN – celebrated the murder by posting an incendiary graphic that features the town's name Otniel in Arabic, with a bloody knife forming the last letter."-more

US Likely to Intervene in Palestinian Terror Case

"The U.S. government is moving closer to intervening in a high-stakes civil case over deadly Palestinian terror attacks as officials met Tuesday with victims' families to discuss concerns over a jury verdict worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The meeting with representatives from the Justice and State departments came amid objections from a lawyer for the plaintiffs, who said the United States was "considering putting a thumb on the scale" because the Palestinian government opposes the jury verdict.

"The Palestinians got a fair trial. The judgment was foreseeable, and they can afford to pay it over time," attorney Kent Yalowitz said in an interview.

At issue is $218.5 million in damages awarded by a New York jury in February for attacks that killed 33 people and wounded hundreds more — a penalty that lawyers say would be automatically tripled under the U.S. Anti-Terrorism Act, but that the State Department fears could weaken the stability of the Palestinian government." -more
