One Day In May (1991)

1991 Dry Bones cartoon - the Miracle of the Ethiopian Aliyah
Click on cartoon for larger version

This is the 18th Anniversary of May 24 1991, when all of Israel was swept up in the witnessing of the miracle of the return of the Ethiopians to this, their ancestral homeland. Long prophesied in their and our holy books and traditions, the entire country was looking a Biblical miracle in the face. The cartoon page addressed the embarrassing question of how a secular nation can interpret a miracle.

As I often did, back in those days, I used a Doobie cartoon at the bottom of the page to deliver a wry observation so as to cut the overly saccharine sentiments of the cartoon above.

Strategic Defense

strategic defense : Dry Bones cartoon.
I saw the successful launch of the Israeli "Arrow Missile" on TV this evening. It's supposed to knock down Iranian Missiles that are on their way to wipe us off the map. The second news item was about the pressure, demands, and restraints that the Obama White House is putting on Israel.

I joined the two items together in today's cartoon.

The State of "Palestine" Quiz

Click on the cartoon below to open a larger, more readable version of this full page Dry Bones Special: the Sate of Palestine Quiz

This "Palestine Quiz" has been bouncing around the Internet for some time ...it is, of course, a reality-test challenge to anyone who has swallowed the Palestine Myth. I thought it would be fun (and timely) to dress it up as a Dry Bones cartoon.

* * *

If you know someone who actually believes that there was ever a country or state called Palestine, don't argue with them. Just slip 'em a copy of "The Dry Bones State of Palestine Quiz".

Jerusalem (1973)

Jerusalem (1973) Dry Bones cartoon - .
Today's Golden Oldie is from 1973.

It was a cartoon that I did thirty six years ago! I'm posting it because today Israel is officially celebrating Jerusalem Day! Back in 1973 this cartoon was a light joke that made folks chuckle. These days it reads like a fundamentalist manifesto.

Did it make you laugh? ...or wince? ...or pound the table and shout "right on!"?

You'll find a lot of really cool stuff at Jacob Richman's Jerusalem Page. Check it out! ...and have a Happy "Yom Yerushalayim".

Obama's Failure

Obama fails to bow to Netanyahu : a Dry Bones cartoon.
Some folks claim that President Obama kissed the Saudi King's ring. There's no proof that that happened. It could be that he just bowed obediently to the Arab ruler without kissing his ring. Click on the picture below to see a video of the embarrassing event.

Peace With Syria (1994)

Peace With Syria (1994) a Dry Bones cartoon.
Today's Golden Oldie is from May 1994.

It's now 15 years this month since I did this Dry Bones cartoon. Syria is still ruled by a dictator. An American President is still trying to find out if "the Syrians really do want peace". And yes, I could easily use this cartoon today without any changes!!

Two State Solution ?

Two State Solution ? : Dry Bones cartoon.
I was listening to two Israeli Knesset members arguing about the "Two State Solution" on TV last night. Most folks just won't admit that the Palestinians are not prepared or able to build a modern, democratic state that could live in peace with a Jewish State of Israel. And yet, even to my ears, the supporter of the Two State Solution seemed to be a "nicer person". She was totally naive but there's something appealing about a dreamer. The problem was that her dream was a self-delusional fantasy. Thinking about that lead me to do today's cartoon.

There's an online "SAY NO TO U.S. PRESSURE ON ISRAEL" Petition. It's been put up by the Stand With Us people. It opposes "U.S. pressure on Israel for premature concessions that will put Israeli security at risk". To see the petition click here.

Geography Lesson

Pakistan's Problem: Dry Bones cartoon.
A couple of days ago I did a cartoon map/lesson about America's Occupied Territories. It was history and geography. Today's cartoon is a map/lesson about the "Pakistan's Problem". Why did geography seem so boring in high school? And so important today?

So does the cartoon work? Or is it too "preachy"?

Ode to Summer (1984)

summer poetry (1984) Dry Bones cartoon - .
Today's Golden Oldie is from May 25, 1984.

On a warm day in May, twenty five years ago this month, my thoughts drifted to the Israeli summer that lay ahead ...and my pen turned out a piece of minimalist "poetry" that was fun to illustrate. I used Mr. Shuldig, my alter ego, to deliver my message.

When Bibi Meets Obama

Click on the cartoon below to open a larger, more readable version of this full page Dry Bones Special:2009 Dry Bones cartoon - Withdrawal from Occupied Territories - and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu gives Obama a History Lesson
Click on cartoon for larger version

Bibi is about to meet with Obama.
For the occasion, at the request of a reader, I've redone a Dry Bones cartoon classic that, more than 30 years ago, back in 1977, gave Jimmy Carter an accurate history lesson in Occupied Territories.

If the reports leaking out of Washington are accurate, the new President seems stuck with the old misconceptions that withdrawing from territory will placate those who lust for our destruction and that America can help by negotiating on behalf of the Arab states that refuse to negotiate directly with the Jewish State of Israel.

The teacher in the 1977 'toon was Menahem Begin, then Israel's feisty Prime Minister. The teacher in today's cartoon is Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu, Israel's current Prime Minister.

Lag Ba'Omer (1984)

Lag Ba'Omer (1984) Dry Bones cartoon - .
Today's Golden Oldie is from May 18, 1984.

Today is the holiday of Lag Ba'Omer. It is as close to a peasant festival as it gets. Bonfires are lit all around the country with people singing and dancing and tossing wood to the hungry flames ...and a new generation of Israeli kids is on the scene to experience the excitement.

To understand the cartoon you have to know that back in 1984 we were worried about inflation and the falling value of the Shekel. Last night, the eve of Lag Ba'Omer, bonfires dotted the countryside, and this morning the air has the traditional smokey quality of the holiday.

Bibi Meets Mubarak

Egypt and Israel : Dry Bones cartoon.
Before his historic first meeting with President Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. I figure that anyone who understands the current situation knows what Bibi and Mubarak will be discussing when they are alone together, behind closed doors. I decided to use a Quiz Show format for this Dry Bones cartoon. Does it work?

Jihad 2009

jihad 2009 : Dry Bones cartoon.
I try to comment on the specific news of the day, but, strangely, many cartoons from decades ago are still not out of date. Today, after looking at the news of the day, I thought it was time to step back and do a cartoon overview of what's "going on". It would be nice to think that decades from now this cartoon will no longer be "relevant".

What do you think?

UN Bias (2004)

UN Bias : Dry Bones cartoon.
The VOA reported yesterday that:
Israeli President Calls UN Gaza Report 'Outrageous'
"Israel's President on Wednesday rejected as "outrageous" a U.N. inquiry that blamed Israel for six serious attacks on U.N. premises during its recent Gaza offensive.

Israeli President Shimon Peres said his government does not accept "one word" of the report, calling it "one-sided" and "unfair."

"We think it is outrageous. We shall never accept it," Mr. Peres said. "We do not think we have to apologize because we have the right to defend the lives of our children and women. They can stop the missiles? All the people who criticize us, can they stop the shooting? Can they stop the killing? The fact is, the minute we strike, they stop shooting."-more

Replay?

when Bibi meets Obama : Dry Bones cartoon.
I keep hearing that the meeting between Bibi Netanyahu and Barack Obama will be a repeat of the 1977 meeting in Washington between our new Prime Minister Begin and the newly elected U.S. President Carter. It prompted me to do this cartoon.

At this point, the only one who could step up to the plate and do a "Sadat" by coming to Jerusalem to address our Knesset and offer his hand in peace is President Assad of Syria.

The Sting (2005)

the Sting(2005) Dry Bones cartoon - .
Today's Golden Oldie is from 2005.

It's the cartoon that I did four years ago when the FBI, under the Bush administration, ran a sting operation against AIPAC. I'm so delighted that charges against Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman have now been dropped by the Obama government.

The story as reported by the Associated Press:

"US federal prosecutors are moving to dismiss espionage-related charges against two former pro-Israel lobbyists who had been accused of disclosing classified defense information. Acting U.S. Attorney Dana Boente said the government moved to dismiss the charges after concluding that pretrial rulings would make it too difficult for the government to prove its case against Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman, top lobbyists for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee."

But a third defendant in the case, Lawrence Franklin, a U.S. government official, pleaded guilty to passing classified government information to the two lobbyists, and is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence. Time for his release?

...and while we're at it, for the long overdue release of Jonathan Pollard by the Obama government?

It's Simple

the 24-state solution : Dry Bones cartoon.
I saw Tzipi Livni, head of Israel's opposition Kadima party, being interviewed on Israel TV this evening. She's off to the States to push for a "two-state" solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. She said that the "two-state" solution was the only path to peace.

I thought about that for a while and thus was born today's cartoon ...and the simple "twenty four-state" solution. Your thoughts?

Jewish Defamers of Israel

Jewish Defamation of Israel: Dry Bones cartoon.
The story as reported by Ynet:
Jewish Prof Equates Israel With Nazis

"Jewish Sociology and Global Studies Professor William Robinson of the University of Santa Barbara in California sparked massive controversy recently after sending his students an email comparing photos of Jews in Nazi concentration camps with Palestinians in war-torn Gaza Strip.

The email, sent during Operation Cast Lead and titled "parallel photos of Nazis and Israelis", was sent to 80 students in his class and included 25 photos of Nazi victims, compared with similar photos from Gaza.

The email also included an essay stating, "Gaza in Israel's Warsaw – one big concentration camp for Palestinians. What we are witnessing is the slow process of genocide." -more

* * *
The rise of anti-Zionist Jewish Defamers of Israel is a dangerous development, and I suggest that we need to directly confront, deconstruct, rebut, analyze, understand, and expose this aspect of the global tidal wave of anti-Semitism swelling up against us.

How?
Stay tuned for further developments. I've got a plan.
