Erev Shavuot starts Thursday (but I made a mistake about when it ends)

The holiday of Shavuot starts on the evening of Thursday, May 21st this year. I need to make a correction to my earlier post. I said that it is a week long holiday, but it is in fact one day long in Israel and two days everywhere else.

Here is a Dry Bones cartoon from 2018 by Yaakov Kirschen.

Shavuot is a holiday that commemorates the Jews receiving the Torah, and the 10 commandments, from God, that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. It is also is a harvest festival. We harvest the wheat and barley. We honor converts, and tell the story of Ruth, mother of King David. We also eat lots of cheese and milk products. Shavuot means "weeks" in Hebrew as it signifies the seven week period between Passover and the completion of the counting of the "Omer", hence, Shavuot. Some Christians refer to this holiday as Pentecost, as seven weeks is also 50 days.

We, here in Israel are celebrating with cheese cake, and also sort of waiting to see when the missiles will start up again. Of course, in the north, despite saying we are in a ceasefire, missiles and mostly drones are attacking everyday, as the army is attempting to keep the residents safe. Welcome to the Middle East and it's symbols and customs. 😀 Love, Sali

Happy Holiday to all!

We Can Do It

dry
Israel’s enemies try to erase the pre-1948 history of the Jews in the Land of Israel. But China has not yet been infected with this denial of Jewish History.

We propose to inoculate the 1.3 billion Chinese against this modern libel with exciting, popular, online, and free to download apps and eBooks …in a form and with content that will appeal to both the Chinese establishment and Chinese university students alike.

Yup! A unique project to bring China and the Jews closer together through educational, digital, Chinese-language, graphic works written and drawn by award-winning Dry Bones cartoonist, scholar, and political analyst Yaakov Kirschen (me)

We can do it ...but we need your help!

Happy Holidays

religious, holiday, christian, Jews, Jewish, shavuot, Pentacost, Jesus, cheese : Dry Bones cartoon.
Right now I'm away from my studio.
I did today's cartoon before leaving for a U.S. lecture tour.

We are so caught up in the battle for the survival of Judeo Christian Civilization and the Jewish State that we seem always to be in a "fighting mood". I hope no one is offended by today's cartoon. It comes with my best wishes for all of us. Happy Holiday(s)!

I'm in America on my "Dry Bones Campaign to turn Z Street into the Grass Roots Zionist Movement that America Needs", and to explain my YIISA (Yale Initiative for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism) "Secret Codes" findings.

You can keep up with my adventures in the U.S.A. by following me at facebook.com/drybonescartoon.

I plan to return home to Israel in time for for Shavuot (June 7).

The Shavuot Holiday (1997)

1997 Dry Bones cartoon: Shavuot.

Tonight (Tuesday May 22, 2007) is the eve of the Shavuot holiday, so I'm posting this Golden Oldie from 1997. When I was a kid growing up in America, the holiday was called Shavuos, but these days (I think) the Israeli Hebrew Shavuot has taken over.

There are many reasons given for the emphasis on eating cheese and other dairy products. I've never seen what is the most obvious one. At Passover time the baby calves, goats, and lambs were born. This, of course triggered the production of milk in their mothers. Now, seven weeks later, much of the milk has been saved as cheese.

I know that my explanation lacks all the intricate and beautiful Talmudic reasoning that illuminates and explains our customs.
Sorry.
