Miracles

Here is a Dry Bones Cartoon by Yaakov Kirschen from 2009, almost 20 years ago. Miracles. It looks like we might be needing more soon. Here in Israel, we expect that we will be at war again within a week or so. Everyone is very calm, but prepared. There is the tension of waiting, and I (for one) am not looking forward to the sirens and the sleep deprivation again. It is especially hard and stressful on the children. But still, I feel that Israel is the safest, place for Jews in these times of crazy and weird antisemitism. It is interesting that this is all happening around Purim.

Soviet Jewry and Simchat Torah

The brave Jews of the USSR demonstrated their continued Jewish people-hood by dancing and singing in synagogues and in the streets on Simchat Torah. This they did in the face of Communist repression. Their actions spoke to the world. In the end we (the Jews) won, They (the Soviet oppressors) lost, and the story has faded from history and our memories, along with organizations like the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry. * * * Please take a look at our books at drybones.com

Russian Aliya (1990)

Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done 20 years ago today. It was October 07, 1990 and Israel was being hit by a flood of immigrants from the Soviet Union. In the following year, 1991, the teetering Soviet Union would collapse when Boris Yeltsin seized power.

1991 would also witness the miracle of another community of Israelites. It would be the return of the Ethiopians to this, their ancestral homeland. For other cartoons about the aliya of Jews to Israel just click on Aliya.

This is the 18th Anniversary of May 24 1991, when all of Israel was swept up in the witnessing of the miracle of the return of the Ethiopians to this, their ancestral homeland. Long prophesied in their and our holy books and traditions, the entire country was looking a Biblical miracle in the face. The cartoon page addressed the embarrassing question of how a secular nation can interpret a miracle.

As I often did, back in those days, I used a Doobie cartoon at the bottom of the page to deliver a wry observation so as to cut the overly saccharine sentiments of the cartoon above.
