Gaza with no weapons or missiles?

 Here is a Dry Bones Cartoon from back in 2009. It is still true today.

It amazes me that I can find cartoons of Yaakov's so easily that still fit the current state of affairs.

I am sending you all an early Shabbat Shalom, as I am leaving very early tomorrow (Friday morning) to Jerusalem for a few days to attend the wedding of a very good and long time friend of Yaakov's. She, and her husband to be, were a super help to me when Yaakov passed away. They immediately came down from Jerusalem, and helped me through dealing with the hospital, and the morgue and the burial society and the funeral. I was a mess, and, of course totally inexperienced with all of the procedures. I owe them so much and I am so happy to be able to celebrate with them now.

I am taking the train, and not taking my computer with me, and also I am staying with another very good old friend that I have not seen in a few years. So... wishing you all blessings and only good things and Shabbat Shalom.

Spring Fever (1985)

Today's Golden Oldie is from 1985.

Back then I did a special Dry Bones cartoon for the Jerusalem Post on Fridays. This is a Friday Dry Bones from May of 1985.

This week in Israel has been made of daily "half-holidays", tomorrow is a holiday, followed by Shabbat, and I've been hit by a goofy kind of stupifying Spring Fever

...when I came across this Golden Oldie from 1985, it "spoke to me".

Holidays (1998)

Today's cartoon is from 1998.

Back then, as now in 2010, the string of holidays, holy days, and Shabbats seemed to have been strategically placed so as to totally disorient life in Israel

Three Day Weekend (1998)

Today's cartoon is from 1998. It celebrated the weird, jet-laggy feel of Israel after a three-day weekend. Last weekend was another. Erev Rosh HaShana on Wednesday, then Thursday and Friday the two-day New Year holiday, followed by Shabbat, and then, at 2AM on Saturday night we set our clocks back an hour!!

Everyone I know here in the Jewish State is still staggering around in a daze.

3 Day Weekend (1983)

Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done on a Friday in 1983. It was the Friday before Shabbat, which was followed by Yom HaZikaron on Sunday, which was followed by Yom HaAtzmaut on Monday. This weekend would have been the same, except for the fact that in 2004 it was decided that when Yom HaAtzmaut falls on a Monday, the festival is postponed to Tuesday. And so this time we don't get the three day weekend we had back in 1983.

Another difference is that I can no longer remember when I thought that 35 seemed old.

Yikes.

Hoping for Warmer Weather (1998)

Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done in January of 1998, ten years ago this month.

Our Prime Minister (then it was Bibi Netanyahu, not Ehud Olmert) was dealing with pressure from the American President (then it was Bill Clinton, not George W. Bush). We were being swindled by a terrorist chieftain posing as a "Democratically elected" Palestinian "President" (then it was Yasser Arafat, not Mahmoud Abbas), and then, as now, Palestinian terrorists were targeting Israeli civilians.

Another similarity is that in Israel this week we've been suffering through a frigid cold spell. The freezing winds that are pounding us are blowing in from the north, out of Russia. So the air is crisp and dry and painfully cold. Today is Thursday and the weatherman is promising a warming up for the one day of Shabbat that passes as our "weekend".

And once again the cold weather is the main topic of conversation between us locals.

So how cold is it where YOU are?

For those of you living outside of Israel this 'toon is probably incomprehensible. As an added confusion this year, the holiday season (Rosh HaShana, followed by Yom Kippur, followed by Sukkot, and then Simhat Torah) began with us going off "summer" time as we set our clocks back an hour, and the country never seemed to get over its "jet-lag".

As the cartoon says, the holidays are over today... but we'll need a Shabbat to recuperate!
