Hezbollah's Human Shields in Lebanon

Dry Bones cartoon - Hizbullah's use of human shields in Lebanon

Hezbollah's strategy seems to be based on the concept that the more civilians that get killed in Lebanon the better the chances for Hezbollah to get international outrage going.
Unfortunately they can't even fool the UN!!

This week the UN humanitarian chief accused Hezbollah of "cowardly blending" among Lebanese civilians and causing the deaths of hundreds during two weeks of cross-border violence with Israel. He said this after a visit to Lebanon on his mission to coordinate an international aid effort.
For more info check out background reports at the Israel Project.

Meanwhile, Mohsen Rezai, Iranian Expediency Council Secretary (and former Commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards) says that if Hezbollah's "patience runs out" there will be "chaos in Tel Aviv".

He doesn't like Condi's support for Israel and so he wants the American Secretary of State tried as a War Criminal and he calls on the "Legal experts of the Islamic World" to "Prepare some kind of legal action against her."

Thanks to the translators at MEMRI (the Middle East Media Research Institute), you can read a transcript or see a video of Rezai's rant.

Demands for a Cease Fire in Lebanon! (1982)

1982 Dry Bones cartoon -Cease-Fire: War in LebanonThe war that we are in today, in the summer of 2006, is a "Golden Oldie"!
A "Blast From The Past"!
We've seen this movie before!!
Way back in the summer of 1982.

We'd entered Lebanon to fight our terrorist tormentors and the "world" demanded a quick cease-fire!
It seemed as if only the United States understood and supported us.
The cartoon above was published on June 14, 1982.

In June 1982, the U.S. Secretary of State said:

"No sovereign state can tolerate indefinitely the buildup along its borders of a military force dedicated to its destruction and implementing its objectives by periodic shellings and raids"

In June 1982 the U.S. President said:

"On Lebanon, it is clear that we and Israel both seek an end to the violence there, and a sovereign, independent Lebanon. We agree that Israel must not be subjected to violence from the north."

For details, sources for the above quotes, and background about what happened back then check out The Lebanon War at the Jewish Virtual Library.

International Force in Southern Lebanon

Dry Bones cartoon - Terrorism, Hizbullah, Hezbollah, Hamas, Sunnis, Shias, Iran, France to lead an international fighting force?Either it'll be a fighting force or it'll be led by France.
Actually we do NOT need an international force to patrol the Lebanese side of the border with Israel.

What's needed is an international force to patrol the Lebanese side of the border with SYRIA!

A force that would prevent the Syrian re-supply of the Hezbollah terrorists.

The Lebanese border with Israel should be patrolled by the Lebanese army.

Flag
I went to a business meeting in Tel Aviv today.
There were giant blue and white billboard ads around town proclaiming that "Israel is Strong"
Young people were distributing free blue and white Israeli flags to motorists.
Flags are starting to go up everywhere.

Missile Attacks from South Lebanon ( 1992 )

1992 Dry Bones cartoon -Missile Attacks from South Lebanon src=This "Golden Oldie" cartoon was published on November 14, 1992
...Fourteen years ago!

The attacks upon our cities, and the provocations and the threats were never deemed to be newsworthy by the international media, our problems were ignored by the international community, and our society was split into "right-wingers" and "leftists" as we endlessly debated the question of survival.

All that has now changed.
Our population is unified... and angry.
Our forces are in Lebanon, attempting to hit the Iranian-controlled terrorists who are implanted there in civilian homes and villages and who are now trying to prevent Lebanese civilians from fleeing the battlefield.

And the world media is noticing... Big time!

Ahmadinejad On The move

Dry Bones cartoon - Terrorism, Hizbullah, Hamas, Sunnis, Shias, Iran, Ahmadinejad on the moveAnybody familiar with Dry Bones knows that I am not big on caricatures.
I prefer to look at history through the eyes of two guys at a coffee house or through characters like King Solomon or Mr. Shuldig and his dog Doobie.

From time to time, however, a character steps onto the political stage who just cannot be ignored.
Yasser Arafat was one such character.
Iran's President Ahmadinejad is another.

When Will This War End?

Dry Bones cartoon - Terrorism, missile attacks, rockets hitting Israeli cities, Hizbullah, Hamas, Sunnis, Shias, Iran, Ahmadinejad, and Israel's two-front war in Lebanon and Gaza... When will this war end?I've used these two characters for many many years. They are two regular guys sitting at a typical Israeli cafe having coffee. One has swept-back hair and glasses. The other has wavy hair, a moustache and three dots on the side of his heads. They almost always appear face to face.

When the war started I stuck the bigger guy into a blue gym suit and decided to seat them back to back, sort of the way we, the Israeli public, now are...united.
Somehow we're no longer divided into feuding leftists and right wingers, no longer categorized as either "regular" Israelis or "settlers".
We all seem to agree that we are now in a fight for survival.

I sat the two guys in this back to back pose a few days ago, when they first commented on the outbreak of the two-front war.

Is It a War? (1982)

1982 Dry Bones cartoon -War and Peace. Israel Invades Lebanon to Fight Terrorists. This "Golden Oldie" cartoon was published on June 9, 1982
...Twenty-four years ago!

Even I am surprised about how much this cartoon describes the situation in Israel today.

Back in 1982, Southern Lebanon was controlled by the PLO terrorists (rather than the Hezbollah terrorists).
Between July 1981 and July 1982 the Palestine Liberation Organization launched hundreds of attacks on Israeli citizens. The situation in Israel's north forced thousands of Israelis to flee their homes or to live in their underground bomb shelters. On June 4th and 5th, 1982, the PLO launched a particularly massive artillery and mortar attack on the Israeli population of the Galilee.

On June 6, the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) crossed the border into southern Lebanon to drive out the terrorists.

The question then, as it is now, was: "Is this a war or just a military action?"

The answer now, as it was then, is clear.
Israeli drivers have become polite. Folks in the street are helpful. Suddenly we're all treating each other with love and respect.
And we're all watching special TV shows and updates.

Yup.
It's a war.

The War, the Arabs, and Ahmadinejad

Dry Bones cartoon - Terrorism, missile attacks, rockets hitting Israeli cities, Hizbullah, Hamas, Sunnis, Shias, Iran, Ahmadinejad, and Israel's two-front war in Lebanon and GazaMost of us dhimmis and infidels see Islam as a unified force.
It's not.
And the power grab by the Shiite Iranians (who now control Hezbollah and Hamas) poses a threat to the secular Sunni Arab states of the region: Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

Misunderstanding Israel (1973)

1973 Dry Bones cartoon -War and Peace. Two Days After the Egyptian Surprise Attack that Launched the October War. This "Golden Oldie" cartoon was published on October 8, 1973 ...2 days after an Egyptian surprise attack on Yom Kippur launched the October 1973 war.

It is obviously an angry comment on the fact that once again our enemies had underestimated ability to fight for our own survival.

As it was then, so it is today. Once again our enemies have misunderstood us and therefore misjudged the extent of our outrage and the fierceness of our response to their deeds.

The outraged Mr. Shuldig of 33 years ago smoked cigarettes and was in an Israeli home-guard "Dad's Army" kind of unit called "Haga". The Hebrew letters of H, G, and A are on Shuldig's uniform (right to left, of course). Our hero also has a military braid over his right shoulder. He also has that dazed "seventies" look.
To see another picture of Shuldig in his Haga uniform, here's one from 1976.

To see the outraged Shuldig of today, just click on War with Hezbollah.

Israel's War With Hizbullah

Dry Bones cartoon - Israel Goes To War in Lebanon Against Hizbulla (Hezbollah), The Shiite Force Controlled By Iran. This is our first war since the outbreak of the Lebanon war on June 4, 1982.
In the years since then we've put up with acts of war and violations of our peace agreements.
We sat through the Scud missile attacks of Gulf War I and, at the request of the Americans, did not fight back ...So that doesn't count.

The country is now angry, unified, and demanding an end to restraint.
Enough already!

We are at war!

Israel at War on Two Fronts

Dry Bones cartoon - War on the borders with Lebanon and GazaThe war began ten months ago when Israeli cities were first shelled from the formerly occupied Gaza strip.

We've lived with, and largely tried to ignore, the ongoing missile attacks on our citizens but the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers was the last straw. Public opinion here in Israel seems totally unified and in complete support of our fighting back.

...And Prime Minister Olmert is no longer looking for euphemisms.

Beautiful Israel (1976)

1976 Dry Bones cartoon -War and Peace. Nine Days After the Entebbe Rescue and a Beautiful, Sexy, Charming Miss Israel Wins the Miss Universe Competition
As I write these words (on July 13, 2006) news is coming in of the expanding war launched against us by Hamas and Hizbullah, Iran's puppet forces in the region.
Missiles are hitting Israeli towns and cities. Army reserves are being called up. The IDF is fighting in Lebanon and Gaza ...And the entire country is holding its breath.

This cartoon was published exactly 30 years ago today, on July 13, 1976.
Only nine days had passed since the incredible Entebbe rescue operation by the IDF surprised the world, saved the kidnapped hostages of that day, and ended the nation's Post-Yom Kippur War depression.

...And then Miss Israel, Rina Messinger, was crowned Miss Universe 1976?!
We were being treated fairly in an international competition?!
Wow!
Israel was now euphoric!!

Nine days after the Entebbe rescue, Rina Messinger, Miss Israel was crowned Miss Universe 1976

Ahmadinejad's Boy's in Gaza

Dry Bones cartoon - Hamas and Ahmadinejad, the War in GazaThe international "Kill All The Infidels" movement now has two competing leaders. Osama Bin Laden and Ahmadinejad.

Now that the Hamas folks have decided to go with Ahmadinejad, we can look forward to Osama's setting up a competitive operation in Gaza and the West Bank.

Secret Talks? (1977)

1977 Dry Bones cartoon - Are Secret Talks Going On? As Usual, We Don't Know.
1977.
Menachem Begin was the Prime Minister.

As it was 29 years ago, so it is today.
Are our leaders secretly negotiating?
Is something positive going on behind the scenes?
We don't know,
but we hope so.

Meanwhile the war goes on.

Olmert on the Intercom

Dry Bones cartoon - Israel wages war in GazaPublic opinion in Israel has changed overnight.

The Hamas "declaration of war" against the Israeli city of Sderot, the firing of more than 1,000 missiles at Israeli cities, the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit, and the kidnapping murder of a young settler seems to have forced us, and our government, to recognize that we are in a war.
...in spite of our desperate attempts to avoid it.

Public backing for further withdrawls has gone up in smoke.
We are now in a new and dangerous ballgame.

By the way, this is my first attempt at drawing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Labor Unrest (1986)

1986 Dry Bones cartoon - Nurses Strike in Israel and it's Entebbe Day (4th of July)Today's Golden Oldie is a "Friday Dry Bones". This is the first time that I'm posting one of these, which were larger than the "normal" daily format.

The subject of the 'toon was a national nurses' strike and the Israeli government's attempt to outwit them.
As usual, in this cartoon, I used King Solomon to represent Israel's government.

It was July 4th 1986, 10 years after the rescue,
but Entebbe was still on our minds.

The cartoon is appropriate given the current Israeli military operations. As the BBC puts it:

"Israel's offensive in Gaza to secure the release of a soldier captured by Palestinian militants is the latest in a history of similar military operations by the Jewish state. By coincidence, it falls near the 30th anniversary of Israel's most famous rescue mission, the raid on Entebbe in Uganda. Former hostages and the elite troops who saved them recall that operation, which happened shortly before midnight on 3 July 1976."

4th of July: Entebbe Rescue (1976)

1976 Dry Bones cartoon - Entebbe Rescue of Hostages, the End of the Yom Kippur Way SyndromeThere was an early movie comedy technique called the "slow burn." The comedian would let his face slide into anger, exasperation, and frustration. In this cartoon I did the opposite. Mr. Shuldig's face slides from depression to relief.

The cartoon was done 30 years ago. It was published on July 6, 1976, two days after the amazing Israeli rescue of hostages held in Entebbe Airport in Uganda on July 4th 1976.

The country had been in a funk since the Yom Kippur War proved our vulnerability.
Now the abduction of a plane load of hostages to Uganda seemed to cruelly underline our helplessness. Uganda's President and insane dictator Idi Amin arrived at the airport, gave a speech in support of the Palestinian terrorists and supplied the hijackers with soldiers and weapons.
Passengers who were not Jews or Israelis were released, leaving the remaining 100 who were either Israelis or Jewish. The hijackers then announced that they would kill their captives if their demands were not met. A deadline was set.

The mood in the Israel grew more frantic, and even darker.
And then... The 4th of July Entebbe rescue!
And the mood of the entire country turned to joy.

Here's how the BBC reported it.

The Palestinian Calendar

Dry Bones cartoon - The Palestinians Create Another Disaster For Themselves By Choosing Hamas Terror Instead of a Palestinian StateI decided that I needed a new Palestinian character. Not the rocket launching criminal or the bag-headed terrorist. Since I've been working in color I had the fun of dressing him in the Palestinian colors of Red, Green, Black, and White.
I don't know if I'll be using him again.
We'll see.

For those of you who don't know about the Palestinian Nakba Disaster Holiday click here.
