Happy Sukkot Holiday! Chag Succot Sameah!

Happy Sukkot Holiday! Chag Succot Sameah!

Enjoy this Dry Bones Cartoon from 2006!

As we settle in to the week long holiday, we see and feel the winter that is approaching. At least, here in Israel, the holidays are very tied to the seasons and it is strange how sharply the holidays delineate the seasonal changes of nature.

We gather in the warmth of our culture, and and unfortunately, the storm clouds seem to be always brewing.

Thank you so much all who have donated!

Shabbat Shalom and Happy Chag Succot!

Shabbat Shalom and Happy Succot. The holiday of Succot (or Sukkot), (or Tabernacles) starts tonight, Friday, and lasts for one week. This is a joyful holiday where we eat and sit and often sleep in flimsy temporary huts with leaf or thatch or bamboo mats for roofs, so that we can still see the sky and stars above and we are part with nature and reminded of our fragile existence. It commemorates the trek through the desert from ancient Egypt under divine protection. In Israel, it is also the Autumn harvest festival.

The whole month is filled with holidays, and almost no real work gets done. And then we finally go back to work until Hannukah in the winter.

Enjoy! Chag Sameach! from Dry Bones and Sali

and one more cartoon just for fun

Thank you so much all who have donated!

The Scuddot Poster, from an Imaginary Holiday

The imaginary Holiday of Scuddot. This Friday night is the start of Sukkot, also known as the holiday of Tabernacles, or Booths. It lasts for 1 week.

But Scuddot is a Holiday that Yaakov imagined from the time of the Gulf War in 1991, when we sat in protected rooms, and wore gas masks against chemical warfare that we thought might be coming from Saddam with his rockets. In those times, we promised the USA that we would not fight back, and so we just tried to protect ourselves. Miraculously, very few were killed, and most of those from nervously forgetting to take the cover off of the gas mask.

Yaakov and I sat in our sealed kitchen. But in fact, our ceiling was wooden slats under red tile, and had cracks open to the sky. So there was no way to really seal it. But Yaakov was a stickler for the rules. One night, after 3 attacks that night, I forgot and left the fire on the gas stove under the kettle for coffee. And when the next attack happened, we rushed to the room to find it filled with gas from the stove where the kettle had overboiled. 😕 So we put on our gas masks and sat in the room till the all clear signal. The masks worked! 😂

We were stupid and crazy, but followed the rules!

The next year, we used our masks while grinding horseradish for Passover. They worked then too!

Here is a page and a poster that Yaakov made for the Jerusalem Report Magazine. We sold signed copies of them at the Jerusalem Book Fair that year.

Thank you so much all who have donated!

Happy Sukkot and Happy Hostage Deal

Dry Bones Golden Oldies by Sali, the LSW. Wishing everyone a Happy Sukkot! We are super joyful that it looks like a deal has been struck to send the hostages home. Until this actually happens, we're still in cautious optimism mode, but it looks good. Have a joyful, happy holiday!

Much love, and wishes for peace and for all of our hostages to be released NOW and for our soldiers to be safe.

I am hoping that there will be no need to wish for the return of the hostages soon, as we are all really looking forward to seeing them very soon. The word at the moment is that the 20 still alive should be home by Monday. We are celebrating, but with fear of something going wrong till the very last minute.

Blessings to you all, and your family, and loved ones... peace, health, happiness and freedom, love, Sali, the LSW (Long Suffering Wife)

Erev Succot (Sukkot) 2025

Dry Bones Golden Oldies in memory of Yaakov Kirschen by Sali, the LSW. The holiday of Succot starts tonight, Monday and lasts for a week.

Here is a Dry Bones cartoon for Succot from 2009.

This cartoon is sort of the same theme as the one that I posted yesterday, of storm clouds gathering. We are all holding our breaths thinking that maybe, perhaps, the hostages will be coming home this week. And maybe we see a glimer of the possibility of peace, at least for a while. But we see the storm clouds. The Houthis are sending cluster bomb missiles almost everyday. Iran has made specific threats to send ballistic missiles over Succot. So it is both a tense and a hopeful time here in Israel. Also we see that Jews in Europe and America are in danger of being attacked and murdered just for being Jewish. More storm clouds, yet all this week we gather for festivities in our flimsy huts and wish for respite from the storm.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and peaceful holiday. Hag Sameach!

Much love, and wishes for peace and for all of our hostages to be really released NOW and for our soldiers to be safe.

Blessings to you all, and your family, and loved ones... peace, health, happiness and freedom, love, Sali, the LSW (Long Suffering Wife)

The outside world is indeed looking crazier and more and more threatening. Dry Bones has been fighting back against the insanity since I started drawing it back in 1973!

Now I've put together an anthology of the best of the Dry Bones Fights Back cartoons. The book is on sale at Amazon http://amazon.com/author/kirschen where, in addition to the (over sized) anthology there's a Kindle copy (and a bookshelf of other Dry Bones books). And if you buy a copy PLEASE leave a review. It would be really helpful.
