The Scuddot Poster, from an Imaginary Holiday
The imaginary Holiday of Scuddot. This Friday night is the start of Sukkot, also known as the holiday of Tabernacles, or Booths. It lasts for 1 week.
But Scuddot is a Holiday that Yaakov imagined from the time of the Gulf War in 1991, when we sat in protected rooms, and wore gas masks against chemical warfare that we thought might be coming from Saddam with his rockets. In those times, we promised the USA that we would not fight back, and so we just tried to protect ourselves. Miraculously, very few were killed, and most of those from nervously forgetting to take the cover off of the gas mask.
Yaakov and I sat in our sealed kitchen. But in fact, our ceiling was wooden slats under red tile, and had cracks open to the sky. So there was no way to really seal it. But Yaakov was a stickler for the rules. One night, after 3 attacks that night, I forgot and left the fire on the gas stove under the kettle for coffee. And when the next attack happened, we rushed to the room to find it filled with gas from the stove where the kettle had overboiled. 😕 So we put on our gas masks and sat in the room till the all clear signal. The masks worked! 😂
We were stupid and crazy, but followed the rules!
The next year, we used our masks while grinding horseradish for Passover. They worked then too!
Here is a page and a poster that Yaakov made for the Jerusalem Report Magazine. We sold signed copies of them at the Jerusalem Book Fair that year.
