Time for Jewish Curses

 

  The world situation is so frustrating. I thought we might all enjoy a chance to curse and have a laugh. This Dry Bones book, is one of his lesser known ones. We call it a "coloring book", but no need to color. You can just enjoy it in black and white. It also makes a great gift for the holidays that are coming soon.

I am putting up this explanation as Yaakov wrote it back in 2017.

After more than fifty years of being a cartoonist I've become a grumpy old man. Mr. Shuldig, the chubby, bald-headed hero of my Dry Bones cartoons is also a grumpy old man. And after decades of writing and drawing my daily Dry Bones cartoon, I’ve decided to tackle two new goals. One is to pass on the flavor of our Jewish immigrant past to new generations of young Jews in English-speaking countries. The second is to charm and re-ignite the memories of other grumpy old guys and gals. The first book in my new “Grandpa’s Jewish Cartoon Coloring Books” series is a cartoon coloring book called “A Dry Bones Guide to Jewish Curses.” Nothing has been re-written or "adjusted" to appeal to modern taste. The cartoons are accurate translations of real Yiddish curses, the kind that drip with nasty, funny, Jewish, immigrant cynicism.
We, the LSW (Long Suffering Wife) and I, hope that you will enjoy reading these pages and have the fun of coloring the cartoons.

Jewish Curses

With the prodding (and encouragement) of the LSW (Long Suffering Wife) I’ve written and drawn a cartoon guide and coloring book of “Jewish Curses”.
The book is not about cursing as in the kind of “cursing” you do when you hit your thumb with a hammer. It’s something entirely different.
 Let me explain.
 In the early 20th century, massive numbers of Jewish immigrants escaped to the English-speaking world with a secret language which only they spoke.
\It was called Yiddish and it carried their unique culture. A culture that allowed them to express their frustrations and anger through wildly funny and insanely nasty Yiddish curses that dripped with Jewish immigrant cynicism. The curses in this book are all translations from the original Yiddish, and no effort has been made to make them more understandable or funny in English.
We hope that, with a little effort, you will find them a door to understanding the mindset, attitudes, and native wit of our Yiddish immigrant past. A past that was rich in the native wit that empowered the classic Jewish comedians and which gave birth to what we now politely call Jewish humor.

We, the LSW and I, hope that you will enjoy reading and coloring the cartoon pages and that you will consider their value in gifting a younger generation with a glimpse into our ethnic past.

Delegitimizing Joke

How long do you think they'll keep pushing the old joke that anti-Zionism is anything but antisemitism?

Speaking of old jokes, today's cartoon is based on an old joke that "everybody knows". Hmmmm. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I've gotten so old that nobody knows all those old jokes. If true, I've got tons of great old jokes that I could pass off as new!!
