According to The Jerusalem Post:

This week commemorates the 70th anniversary of the voyage of the Exodus, a ship carrying over 4,500 Jewish immigrants from France to Israel following World War II.

The ship left the southern French port of Sete on July 11, 1947. A majority of the ship's passengers were Holocaust survivors who possessed no legal travel documents for their arrival in then-Mandatory Palestine. Upon nearing its arrival at Haifa's port, British soldiers boarded the ship, attempting to turn the vessel back. The British had already announced that the passengers would be deported back to France, although they were first held in internment camps in Cyprus.

While the ship returned to France, the immigrants on board refused to get off, braving a heat wave and food shortages. Though the British eventually headed the ship to Hamburg, where they forced the passengers to disembark.

Many of the ship's passengers reportedly settled in Israel later on. Among them was Noah Klieger, the French-born president of the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team. Klieger, who survived Auschwitz, went on to become a well-known journalist and writer in Israel, covering a range of topics from various Nazi trials - including that of Adolf Eichmann - to sports.

The story of "the ship that launched a nation" has been told time and again. The 1960 film 'Exodus' featuring Jewish-American star Paul Newman was based on the ship's story, as was Leon Uris' 1958 novel of the same name.

The Exodus' would-be immigrants were part of 'Aliya bet', or the second wave of immigration. Thanks to a declaration by the British in the 1939 MacDonald White Paper, Jewish immigration to the mandate was curbed at 75,000 over a five-year period in the wake of World War II. While over 100,000 Jews attempted to immigrate during this time, only about half were successful. The British turned many ships away, sending the passengers to their fate in Europe. Others were kept in internment or detention camps, including Atlit, which has since been turned into a museum.

One is to pass on the flavor of our Jewish immigrant past to new generations of young Jews in English-speaking countries. The second is to charm and re-ignite the memories of other grumpy old guys and gals. The first book in my new “Grandpa’s Jewish Cartoon Coloring Books” series is a cartoon coloring book called “A Dry Bones Guide to Jewish Curses.” Nothing has been re-written or "adjusted" to appeal to modern taste. The cartoons are accurate translations of real Yiddish curses, the kind that drip with nasty, funny, Jewish, immigrant cynicism.

Jewish Curses

With the prodding (and encouragement) of the LSW (Long Suffering Wife) I’ve written and drawn a cartoon guide and coloring book of “Jewish Curses”.
The book is not about cursing as in the kind of “cursing” you do when you hit your thumb with a hammer. It’s something entirely different.
 Let me explain.
 In the early 20th century, massive numbers of Jewish immigrants escaped to the English-speaking world with a secret language which only they spoke.
\It was called Yiddish and it carried their unique culture. A culture that allowed them to express their frustrations and anger through wildly funny and insanely nasty Yiddish curses that dripped with Jewish immigrant cynicism. The curses in this book are all translations from the original Yiddish, and no effort has been made to make them more understandable or funny in English.
We hope that, with a little effort, you will find them a door to understanding the mindset, attitudes, and native wit of our Yiddish immigrant past. A past that was rich in the native wit that empowered the classic Jewish comedians and which gave birth to what we now politely call Jewish humor.

We, the LSW and I, hope that you will enjoy reading and coloring the cartoon pages and that you will consider their value in gifting a younger generation with a glimpse into our ethnic past.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's interior minister has warned that the country is home to more than 500 Islamic militants who could be capable of carrying out assaults on their own or as members of "hit teams." Speaking in an interview with Bild newspaper, Thomas de Maiziere said there were currently at least 520 "potential attackers" in the country, which has been on edge since two Islamic State-inspired attacks in July. He said another 360 "relevant" people were known to police because of their close proximity to the potential attackers.

Many Germans fear that fighters belonging to the Islamic State jihadist group could have slipped into Germany with the roughly one million of refugees from Syria, North Africa and Asia who arrived last year. "The terror threat now stems from foreign hit teams as well as fanatical lone wolves in Germany," de Maiziere said in the interview ahead of the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the United States, which were partly coordinated from Germany."The hit teams are secretly smuggled into Europe and prepare their actions without being noticed, as we saw with the attacks in Paris and Brussels," he added. "But it's even more difficult to uncover the fanatical lone wolves. Unfortunately, there is a real and present danger from both threats."

He said security authorities were doing everything possible to monitor "the potential terrorists" and noted that there have been more investigations and arrests this year. Despite their efforts, he said, "the authorities are assuming there are undiscovered lone wolf terrorists out there."

Germany had until July been spared the kind of militant attacks suffered by neighboring France and Belgium. But in late July, Islamic State claimed two attacks -- on a train near Wuerzburg and at a music festival in Ansbach -- in which asylum-seekers wounded 20 people in total. The anti-immigrant party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has seized on the attacks to criticize Chancellor Angela Merkel's migrant policies.

The immigrant situation in Germany, according to the Gatestone Institue:

" the German government has lost track of the whereabouts of hundreds of thousands of migrants who entered the country in 2015. N24 television has reported that up to 50% of "asylum seekers" have gone into hiding; their whereabouts are unknown. They presumably include economic migrants and others who are trying to avoid deportation if or when their asylum applications are rejected. The Saarbrücker Zeitung reported that up to 30% of the migrants being sheltered in the eastern German states of Brandenburg, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt have "simply vanished." Separately, German authorities estimate that hundreds of thousands of migrants have entered the country without being registered and whose whereabouts are unknown."-more
