Partition

In 1947, Great Britain relinquished to the UN the power to make decisions relating to the status of "Palestine". The General Assembly appointed a special committee to deal with the matter. The committee proposed partitioning the land into two states, a Jewish state and an Arab state. On November 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly voted to accept that partition plan resolution, 33 to 13. To this day, 68 years later, Not a single Arab state has accepted Israel as the Jewish State.

Pressuring Israel (1978)

Today's cartoon is 32 years old. I drew it in 1978. The latest news (at the time of this writing) is a trial balloon rumor of what America will "give" us if our Prime minister will bow to their demands.

What is offered (and was offered in 1978) is "continued support" if we will do as we're told!

The clear message to the enemies of the West then, and now, is that American support of Israel is conditional. A message which is welcome news to the Arab, Turkish, and Iranian regimes which refuse to accept the UN's 1947 call for a Jewish State in Palestine.

The Jewish State

The root cause of the mess in the Middle East is really quite simple. In 1947 The United Nations (General Assembly Resolution 181) called for the area of Palestine between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea to be partitioned into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. Simple.

The Arab leadership rejected the plan and launched a genocidal war against the new-born Jewish State. The Arab leadership continues to this day to oppose the two-state (one Jewish and one Arab) solution. The Arab rejection of the Jewish State is the ongoing cause of the conflict.

Foreigners becoming citizens of the United States recite the "pledge of allegiance". An amendment to the Israeli Citizenship Act calls for the words "Jewish and democratic state." to be added at the end of the Israeli pledge of allegiance. The pledge has nothing to do with loyalty to or belief in any religion. It affirms loyalty to the Jewish and democratic state of Israel. This has resulted in a new wave of delegitimization of Israel, and of a new rejection of the U.N.'s 1947 partition plan for the establishment of a Jewish State.

* * * I'm just back from my trip to America. While strolling along New York's 5th ave., an inflammatory headline screamed out at me and other passersby from a newspaper vending machine.

It was the front page of the "Jewish Forward". The headline was:

New Loyalty Oath Unusual in Asserting Religion
Israel Stands Out in Requiring Fealty to a Specific Faith

Extradition

The breaking news here in Israel is that the FBI wants us to extradite accused Israeli "crime bosses" to the United States. Here's the story:

Abergil to be extradited to US for slew of crimes

"Israeli reputed underworld ringleader indicted on crimes committed on American soil; According to LA Times, State Department considers him as one of world’s top 40 drug importers to US

Abergil is being accused of an array of offenses: Murder, drug trafficking, money laundering, extortion, heading a crime organization and conspiring to commit crimes.

The exact details of his actions in the US only began being revealed on Tuesday. The process of his extradition to the authorities there will begin soon.

According to the indictment, Itzik Abergil was involved in the murder of Israeli drug dealer Sammy Atias in Los Angeles after the latter allegedly stole money from him during a narcotics transaction. -more

PLO Refugee Boat (1988)

The portrayal of Palestinians as refugees and victims so crucial to the drumming up of rage against the State of Israel reached a new high point with the attempt this month to orchestrate a break into Israel by Gazan civilians suffering a "Humanitarian Crisis". Or was it just a rerun of a similar attempt to stage an event that was tried 20 years ago in February of 1988?

A loyal reader sent me a link to Lenny Ben-David's blog which recalls that:

"Israel was faced with a similar threat exactly 20 years ago when the PLO started to outfit a ship, Sol Phryne, and renamed it the al Awda (the Return). Some 200 Palestinian refugees and international "dignitaries" were slated to board the ship and provocatively sail into Haifa…" -more

Just as the PLO had appropriated the term Palestinian (which used to refer only to Jews in the region), Arafat was now planning a bizarro version of Israel's 1947 "refugee ship", the Exodus. The 1947 Partition Plan (1975)

Today's "Golden Oldie" Dry Bones cartoon was done way back in 1975. More than thirty years ago! To mark the 28th anniversary of the 1947 UN two-thirds majority vote for the partition of western Palestine into a Jewish and and Arab state. A plan which was then rejected by the Arab states.

Today, November 29, 2007 is the 60th anniversary of the UN partition plan vote.

My guess is that if they had a time machine and could go back to revisit that fateful decision of theirs, the Arabs would reject it again! The weakness of the fledgling Jewish State being too tempting to resist attacking.
