Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah

 Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah. Tuesday, April 14th, 2026. We must remember, (even more now), as the rest of the world forgets.

Here in Israel all places of entertainment and restaurants and food stores close at 6PM tonight, Monday, and a siren will sound tomorrow at 10 AM while all stand silent.

This will be an especially sad and difficult day for me, as it is the one year anniversary of when Yaakov passed away by the regular Gregorian calendar. 💔

The Jewish holiday of Yom HaShoah ( Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Day) is a national day of commemoration in Israel, on which the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust and the Jewish resistance to the Nazis are memorialized.

In Israel, it is a national memorial day. On the evening which begins the observance, there is a state ceremony at the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Authority, Yad Vashem. At 10AM on the day of Yom HaShoah, air-raid sirens are sounded and people across the country stop what they are doing and stand at attention in respect of the fallen. Places of public entertainment are closed and flags on public buildings are flown at half mast.

The original proposal was to hold Yom HaShoah on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Nisan, the date of the Warsaw ghetto uprising (April 19, 1943), but this was problematic because the 14th of Nisan is the day immediately before Passover. The date was therefore moved to the 27th of Nisan, which is eight days before Yom Ha'atzma'ut,(Israeli Independence Day)

In 2022 Yom HaShoah begins in the evening of Wednesday, April 27 and ends in the evening of Thursday, April 28.

Yom HaShoah: A large portion of Israel’s nearly 200,000 survivors live in poverty. A 2015 survey by the Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel found that one quarter of Israeli survivors can’t afford medicine, while 30 percent sometimes go without food. Two-thirds say they are “distressed” by their financial situation. “There are still gaps between the response and what’s needed,” Roni Klinsky, the foundation’s CEO, told JTA in 2014. In the past, “people got less help and weren’t organized enough to get assistance. The survivor issue wasn’t a high priority.”

Tonight is Erev Yom Hashoah, the eve of Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Today is Yom HaShoah, and the threat of genocidal antisemitism seems more real today than it has in many years. * * * According to the Jewish Virtual Library:

"The full name of the day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust is “Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah”— literally the "Day of (remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism." It is marked on the 27th day in the month of Nisan — a week after the seventh day of Passover, and a week before Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for Israel's fallen soldiers). It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

The date was selected by the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) on April 12, 1951. The full name became formal in a law that was enacted by the Knesset on August 19, 1953. Although the date was established by the Israeli government, it has become a day commemorated by Jewish communities and individuals worldwide." -more
