It seems a more subdued atmosphere in Israel this High Holiday season. It is probably because of the war and the hostages. The rain started for a bit yesterday, right on time for the season. It always moves me, how perfectly attuned the Jewish holidays are to the weather and seasons here in Israel. We are still having our daily Houthi missle attacks. The UN is there to remind us of any wrongs, just as this cartoon suggests. This cartoon was done in 2000.

Shana Tova - to a good New Year

  Dry Bones Golden Oldies in the fond memory of Yaakov Kirschen (Dry Bones). Brought to you by Sali, the LSW. This cartoon is from 1999 This is a real classic. It is one of my all time favorites.

I thought that Yaakov had re done this cartoon in color, but I could not find it. I am posting this a bit early so that you have time to share, if you want.

The High Holidays start with Rosh Hashanah, which begins this coming Monday evening, September 22, 2025, and ends at sundown on Wednsday, September 24, 2025.

Yaakov had very strong beliefs about Rosh Hashana. I will quote him from an older blog. But I changed the Hebrew date to be true for this year. It is interesting to me that he chose to include a comment about the UN when he wrote this. 

"I'm forever getting into arguments with otherwise knowledgeable Jews in Israel who claim that Rosh Hashanah marks the date on which the World was created. Wrong! Rosh HaShanah marks the date of the creation of Adam and Eve and counts the 5786 years since that Biblical event.

On the other hand it's hard to find a Jew here in Israel who would argue with my low opinion of the UN."

I was going to post a Shana Tova cartoon today, but I came upon this while looking and could not resist. Yesterday, I was in a Druze village in the north and heard about the terrible situation of the Syrian Druze and how the UN is not only not protecting them, but acually helping with the effort to wipe them out. (Same as they are enabling Hamas in Gaza)

The Peace Process

Two very kind and diligent readers wrote to me about the incomplete cartoon from yesterday. One did a pretty good retouch fix and the other sent me a link to the original in good shape that I was able to save. So I am reprinting, the cartoon in good resolution and with all it's boxes complete. Much thanks to our readers. In these days of negotiation talks and condemnations by most of the world, we remember, and might need to remind people of the truth of this cartoon.

Trying our best

After I decided on this cartoon for today's blog, I came upon another that I liked better and couldn't decide between the two. Then I realized that the second cartoon from 1993 was cut off at the bottom and was not a good resolution, so went went back to look for it as a better version, but I could not find. So I am going to put up also the second, blurry cartoon. This is something that Yaakov would never do, but I really liked the wording and concept, so I am adding it. Wishing us all a good and better New Year.

Europeans Condem Israel

Israel works hard to avoid civilian deaths as much as possible, and still is accused of war crimes. We would not have needed to suffer 800 of our soldiers dead and 2 years of this mess if we were actually wanting to commit genocide and starvation.

On the brighter side, all of us in the Middle East saw the beautiful red full moon last night. Maybe it portends a brighter future as we approch Rosh Hashana. I hope so. Yaakov was always so much more optimistic than I tend to be. We balenced each other out. Wishing that we had the benifit of his wisdom now, but older cartoons will have to do, as this one from 10 years ago.

700 days

 Dry Bones Golden Oldies in the fond memory of Yaakov Kirschen (Dry Bones). Brought to you by Sali, the LSW.

It has been 700 days today that our hostages are still in Gaza. It is also the 53rd anniversery of when the 11 Isaelies were murdered at the 1972 Munich Olimpics in Germany.

I did not intend to post today. I went to the dentist, and didn't really feel like following the news. But I took my laptop with me as I had some work to do, and I am now at a cafe. It is only the second time ever that I have been on the laptop at a cafe. I always use it from home. I looked at a folder of cartoons and this one jumped out at me. Yes, indeed, we live in "interesting" times. Maybe, hopefully, eventually, the times will be less "interesting". Love and Shabbat Shalom.

Hiding Behind Children and Civilians

I would add that they hide now not just behind the children, but behind the civilians and our hostages too. People in Gaza City are trying to flee south, but Hamas is forcebly preventing them from leaving according to many on-site reports.
