Hurricane

hurricane, Hokusai, great wave, Today's cartoon is an outreach to the communities being hit by terrible destructive hurricanes. When I was a young art student I was taken with the mastery of the Japanese artist Hokusai and this is sort of an homage to him.

The years have slipped by and I am no longer a "young art student."

I'm now an old newspaper cartoonist (in a post-newspaper age) about to celebrate his 80th birthday (March 8).

I'm not starving in a garret, I'm living in a rambling old house in Israel with my LSW (Long Suffering Wife). If you are a fan of Dry Bones it would be great if you could/would make a donation to keep us going. http://mrdrybones.com/donate.html

and, of course, perhaps buy a copy of my graphic novel Trees, The Green Testament. Get yours at http://amazon.com/author/kirschen or order a copy directly from me for me to autograph and for my LSW to mail to you from our local Post Office. http://store.drybones.com/

It makes a wonderful gift and comes with our love and best wishes in this time of wonderful miracles and terrible stress.

The project ends on Friday! In just two days! If you haven't joined the campaign yet, can I entice you into clicking on Haggadah and checking it out while you still can?

I've suddenly come down with a heavy cold and she's insisting that I take vitamin C's, drink copious amounts of water, take to bed, and forget about doing a cartoon for today. I actually had to sneak out of bed to draw today's cartoon!

SANDY

sandy, weather, hurricane, disaster, natural disaster, East Coast, america kirschen : Dry Bones cartoon. After spending the day watching the news coverage of Sandy, the superstorm, I sketched out this cartoon. The LSW (Long Suffering Wife) looked at it and said that nobody would recognize the cartoon reference to Sandy (Arf Arf) Little orphan Annie's dog. "Wrong!" I said, "and besides, I had fun drawing it."

Meanwhile we both hope that all of our East coast fans and friends are safe.

Natural Disaster (1998)

(1998) Dry Bones cartoon: heavy rain in Israel, Flood Disaster in Nicaragua.
Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done 12 years ago in the winter of 1998. Back then the weather had suddenly turned rough and we were caught in freezing downpours. We were cold and wet, but on TV we saw the devastation that a brutal hurricane had caused in Nicaragua.

Israel's balmy Spring-like weather disappeared today. We were caught in thunderstorms and forced to face leaking roofs. A computer that sits in my living-room has gone dark. Apparently it's been damaged by a power outage caused by a lightning strike. Of course it is impossible to complain at the "suffering" I've been put through by Mother Nature in the face of the horrifying natural disaster that just hit the people of Haiti.

But today's cartoon was about Nicaragua in 1998. Below is a contemporary report from the U.S. National Climatic Data Center on that disaster:

"An estimated 3800 dead with perhaps as many as 7,000 others still missing. Two million people directly affected and 500,000 - 800,000 homeless. Intense near-stationary rain bands over western Nicaragua on Thursday and Friday (October 29-30) caused tens of inches of rain to fall. The crater lake atop the dormant Casita volcano filled and part of the walls collapsed on Friday, October 30, causing mud flows that eventually covered an area ten miles long and five miles wide. At least four villages were totally buried in the mud that was several feet deep. Over 2,000 of the dead were from the areas around the collapsed volcano near Posoltega. In many cases, survivors had to wait days before the mud had dried enough to walk to rescuers."- more
