Romney in 2012

Mormon, campaign, Bias, Democracy, Presidency, Elections, JFK, Obama, American Blacks, America, 1960, 2008, 2012, : Dry Bones cartoon. How old is Uncle Drybones?
I'll tell you how old.

In 1960 I lived in New York, and JFK was running for President. People mumbled about the threat of a Roman Catholic President. "How do we know that Jack Kennedy wont be controlled by the Vatican?! . . . by the Pope in Rome!!"

In 2008 Obama was running for President, and I was visiting America on a speaking tour. Somewhere in Arizona someone mumbled to me "But he's black!!, who's going to vote for a black?!" The mumbler did not use the word "black" but employed a more colorful term instead.

It's now 2012, Romney is running for President. Last week, an American on an overseas contract working here in Israel mumbled to me "I'm disappointed in Obama but I couldn't vote for Romney. Romney's a Mormon. They're a cult!"

That's how old Uncle Drybones is!
I've been mumbled to before.

Uncomfortable Truth (1991)

1991 Dry Bones cartoon Jonathan Pollard, American Jews, antisemitism, Jesse Jackson, America, American Blacks,

I drew today's Golden Oldie twenty years ago this week, on March 21, 1991.

For me, the years have passed quickly. I suspect that for Jonathan that's not true. No one else in the history of the United States has ever received a life sentence for passing classified information to an ally - only Jonathan Pollard. The median sentence for this offense is two to four years. Even agents who have committed far more serious offenses on behalf of hostile nations have not received such a harsh sentence.

If our community's unforgivable lack of response to Pollard's outrageous treatment was an uncomfortable truth back then, in 1991 ...how much more despicable now, an unbelievable twenty years later, in 2011??!

American Blacks (1979)

American Blacks turn against Israel(1979) Dry Bones cartoon - .
Today's Golden Oldie is from August 23, 1979.

I drew this cartoon exactly thirty years ago this month! I grew up in an America in which Jews and Blacks were allies. The fight for equal rights for American Blacks had been watered with Jewish blood and fought for with Jewish idealism. It was a painful experience to witness the revisionist history and antisemitic libels of the Black Muslims creep into the rhetoric of Black "activists" and Christian preachers.

It was an angry cartoon.
