Erev Shavuot starts Thursday
The holiday of Shavuot starts on the evening of Thursday, May 21st this year. Here is a Dry Bones cartoon from 2018 by Yaakov Kirschen.
Shavuot is a week long holiday that commemorates the Jews receiving the Torah, and the 10 commandments, from God, that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. It is also is a harvest festival. We harvest the wheat and barley. We honor converts, and tell the story of Ruth, mother of King David. We also eat lots of cheese and milk products. Shavuot means "weeks" in Hebrew as it signifies the seven week period between Passover and the completion of the counting of the "Omer", hence, Shavuot. Some Christians refer to this holiday as Pentecost, as seven weeks is also 50 days.
We, here in Israel are celebrating with cheese cake, and also sort of waiting to see when the missiles will start up again. Of course, in the north, despite saying we are in a ceasefire, missiles and mostly drones are attacking everyday, as the army is attempting to keep the residents safe. Welcome to the Middle East and it's symbols and customs. 😀 Love, Sali
Happy Holiday to all!
