The holiday begins

Today is the first day of the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights.
The Jewish day does not start at midnight, it starts at sundown, so last night was the start of the first day of the holiday and we lit the first candle.
Tonight will usher in the second day and we will light the first AND second candle!
Each night we add another of the eight to the number of candles we light, until the night when we light all eight.

We light the eight candles with a special ninth candle called the Shamash candle. The eight candles are all on the same level while the Shamash is higher or lower or otherwise set apart.
