The cartoon Taliban had it right. He called the ignorant offenders a sect of Jews.We should keep, this in mind. This so called sect claims to study the same written Torah as well as the oral Torah and even claims to be Jewish. I am insulted and embarrased by their very un-Jewish actions.
At the same time, I feel that in the end they will return to the Jewish fold and observances.

We are 60% of all Egged users in Jerusalem, and in EVERY democracy the majority rules. So it's time that we make our own bus system, with Torah rules and not leftist rules. I don’t buy into your secular confusion, Bones: Judaism is not Western and Jewish values are not Western values. Judaism is Eastern, ancient, profound, complex, beautiful and - moral. In Judaism morality and legality coincide! So, if the State of Israel for you has to be a non Jewish Western democratic [read Hellenistic] entity, than it really has not much Jewish reasons to be, does it? What’s the point in having a non-Jewish State on G-d’s biblical Land of Israel? Can you please explain this to us? What is the point in having this holiest of Land coerced, against G-d’s will, into a secular strait-jacket, as if it was America and as if the Jews here were Americans?

Extremists are a plague. The law is for everybody, minorities included. And, Ariel Ben Yochanan, this is not about Western or Eastern values, this is about HUMAN
values. How would you feel, living in a female-dominated society where you would have to dress "modestly", sit at the back of the bus and not be allowed to live a life as an equal to women ?

If the haredim want to segregate themselves as Yosh said, let them operate a private line and leave the public lines to those who do not want their hardline interpretations of halacha.
Fortunately, Orthodoxy is not monolithic; this is a MINORITY of Orthodox who demand these strict "standards." Most of us have no problem with modernity--and regardless of those who would brand us as somehow lesser Jews (as Yosh and ABY seem to be saying) there is room for all of us under Judaism.
I have a huge problem with a statement like ABY made, in effect saying that anything that goes against his strict interpretation of halacha is "Hellenistic." Garbage! I respect that people like Yosh and ABY have different opinions about what is proper, but that does not mean that they are right; they have no right to force their chumrot (strictures) on me or anyone else who does not share their strict interpretation of halacha.
For better or worse, Israel is a modern as well as a Jewish state. I don't approve of everything that is done there, but I can respect those who disagree (and register my protest PEACEFULLY). What the haredim are doing is causing sinat chinam (baseless hatred), just as much as any secular who would do the same for their point of view.
If this is haredi bashing, so be it. There is a limit to what extremists of either side should be permitted to say and do--let's hope cooler heads prevail and we will survive this latest event in our living together in the Jewish state.
The current media hupla is a witch-hunt. The people being targeted do not "attack women in western clothing" and "want sex segregation of public streets and buses." They want to live in their own communities according to their own standards; they are not trying to impose their way of life on other people living in other communities. It is the media that is attempting to invade their private way of life and to promote hatred.

What one person does does not mean all frum Jews are like that. L'havdil, when a crazy Jewish man cruelly killed Leiby Kletzky, that did not make all of us into insane murderers! That is what they are trying to do in Israel!
I unfortunately do not live in Eretz Yisroel, and I am not a Meah Shearim type, but I will not sit next to a man on public transportation. In spite of my age, I will stand. I don't particularly like the buses with curtains, but I do want a place where I can sit next to another woman without being made into a terrorist for that right!

I am with you all the way. It is written "in the sweat of they face thou shall eat your bread", yet they do no work and bite the hand that feeds them. From my own sources, I understand that there between 16 and 23 million Pathans (Patunim). They converted to Islam (possibly by force) less than 200 years ago. I also understand that there are Shlichim making quiet contact with them. So,heaven help the Arabs when this lot wake up to themselves and get their act together.
And how do we "absorb" even 10% of them?

I have a better idea. Keep the chareidi segregated within their own neighborhoods, that way they will be able to keep their wives as slaves and do as they like. If they decide to leave their own neighborhoods, they should have blinders on them that won't let them see women.
They bring to mind the Taliban in Afghanistan who permitted women to die rather than get medical aid because females could not see a female doctor since female doctors were not permitted to exist and no male doctor would or could touch a female.

I have given up on the orthodox form of Juda-ism. I have nothing against them, as a scientist I cannot abide deliberate ignorance; it drives me right up a wall.

Yes, let them stay "in their own backyard". The Amish in the US are also extremists but they don't harrass the people around, they live in secluded communities and avoid mingling with non-Amish. So should it be with the haredim.

Except I've known Orthodox Jewish women, and as soon as they see how the grass IS greener, not being treated as cattle, then they decide what they want for themselves.
A society that treats women as less than equal is borderline psychotic. Look at Egypt for example, or countries that stone women for getting raped.
Is that what you want? If so, get a new country.

YOU get a new country! This is Eretz Israel, the JEWISH, and not the Goyish homeland. You want to live like the European do, go to Europe. Herzl didn't want to come here, he wanted Uganda as the new homeland. But he wanted also that all of you convert to Christianity. So what do you want? You want that the Goyim like you? They will hate you, no matter what you do or say.
We are Jews, so let act JEWISH. Stop the Goyish mentality! And yes, our women DO want to sit separate (though there are always a few that think modern, but then they are not chareidi anymore).
Having long been a fan of yours (for more than 30 years) I am disappointed with you Yakov, and hurt that you would jump on the bandwagon of bashing haredim. Your blog could make shalom as it so often does, with gentle humor, but this time you are adding fuel to the fire and increasing hatred and division.
