New Year (1999)

January 1, 1999

(1999) Dry Bones cartoon: dogs, New Year, 21st Century, 20th Century, 1999, Shuldig, Doobie,
In 3 days it'll be the first day of 2012.
Today's Golden Oldie is from the first day of 1999.

Mr. Shuldig and his dog Doobie are my favorite characters. I can allow Shudig to express gushy, sweet, and optimistic thoughts knowing that Doobie's blunt realism will rescue the cartoon from a sugary overdose.

Speaking of "Dog Years", there is an online site on the topic. It begins with:
"A widely held belief is that one dog year is the same as 7 human years. Although that could be used as a very rough guide, it ends up being misleading, especially when used to calculate younger or older dogs. That could be a problem in certain situations such as figuring out pet insurance, or the health of a dog (whether a veterinarian checkup is needed, etc)." -more (includes a dogyear/humanyear calculator

What is a year? Its just an artificial demarcator plucked out of the air by humans and is of as much interest to nature, in the great scheme of things, as the woes of the Chinese Panda are to the tropical fruit fly.

Maximum, a year is a bracketing of the past into recognizable periods.

That said, may all the readers of Dry Bones have a happy new bracket that will be infinitely better, happier and more fruitful that any other past bracket!!!

Actually the first of the year is 2 weeks before Passover.
"In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD's passover."

All right, Anonymi (?) 2:59 and 7:21.

Yes, Rosh Hashanah is the first day of the year for us. January 1 is the beginning of the civil year. Give the "pagan holiday" line a rest.

And, it's true that Nisan is the first year in the calendar because of Pesach.

I wonder if that really matters to many people, because they go by the civil year, and that is all that matters. The modern world uses that calendar. You must accept that reality.

So, in that spirit, Happy (civil) New Year!

Actually the last year of the 20th century was not the year 1999 but it was the year 2000.
There was no year 0.
The first millenium lasted from year 1 to year 1000 included (at 31st december 1000 12PM.).
The second millenium lasted from year 1001 to year 2000 included (at december 2000 12PM.).
The first year of the third millenium was 2001.

Dear Mr Bones,

This strip (or similar) should be embossed on another series of your coffee mugs. It's priceless!!!
