(1980) Dry Bones cartoon: 1980 changing into new year 1981.

Today's cartoon is from December 31, 1980.

The celebration of the civil New Year is discouraged in the Jewish State. Back then Mr. Shuldig and I celebrated by putting on a party hat, blowing a party noisemaker, and changing the number 1980 to 1981 in the (c)Date of the cartoon.

* * * This week, thirty years later, we're about to change the number 2010 to 2011. Part of the fun of doing this blog is the ability to stroll through history by rummaging through these Golden Oldies with you guys.

At 8:41 AM, Anonymous said...: Just looking at the cartoon without reading it; I thought I saw that he was making a new year's resolution. He no sooner celebrated New Years and he had to tear it up.
Then after I read it. I still saw him making the resolution beforehand but the resolution was to not celebrate the civil new year. He still failed and had to tear it up. Happy New Year any ways!

So, I'd like to ask you to dedicate five minutes of your time to think this over and challenge you to come up with 1 (one) item that is not a personal offence, that actually proves this widely held opinion. My opinions are in the cartoons, and even if that were not the case, I wouldn't waste my time in a semantic argument about the Jewish State. Are returness from the lost tribe of Dan "Jewish" ? or Israelite? or...?

At 3:15 PM, Irv said...: Ariel Ben Yochanan, Isense your love for G-d and the Jewish people and I believe even for the Jewish state of Israel.We Jews have only one New Year, but we do share the world and use two calenders,one for Halachic reasons and one for business in a non-Jewish world.
Yaakov's Bones cartoons are a spoof on this fact, and can be interperated in the light of our Non Jewish world.
My obligation and yours and that of every Jew is to bring Jews and Noaich Jews closer to G-d, who I believe understands very well that humans must work with what is, in the hope of attainig what will be.
I believe that the Jewish State of Israel was brought about with the help of G-d and Am Yisrael, and even some G-d believing Xtians which is a positive sign for the future. I believe that Meshiach will be our man.
Bones is helping realize our goal.
