Israelis think the turkey came from India. That's why we call it 3oF HoDu (as in Hindu), literally "bird of India". HoDu is a homonym that also means "thanks, to give thanks".
Many Israelis know that it is customary to eat turkey at the
Thanksgiving holiday meal. Half of them think turkey is served because
the name of the holiday is Thanksgiving. The other half think the
holiday is called Thanksgiving because turkey is eaten on that day.
The turkey is quite a strange bird.
She's really from HoDu I heard.
It's the meat from this beast
On Thanksgiving we feast.
Now isn't that really absurd?
Chow. I mean ciao,
Israel "izzy" Cohen
FYI turkey and cranberries are both native to North America and reportly were eaten at the first Thanksgiving feast.
Happy Thanksgiving all ...
Thanks for the lesson Izzy. I always enjoy learning more about cultures.
Brother Yaakov, I love your Thanksgiving cartoon today. Regarding your comment that LSW told you you're not allowed to say Christmas anyway, you can tell her that the US Air Force base where I work broke with the PC tradition and started calling their tree a Christmas tree again this year. They are lighting the Christmas tree and Menorah at the same time.
Blessings to you and your family.
I'm originally from the USA, already more than 50 years in Israel and a fervent Zionist. Thanksgiving is the one USA holiday that I still have a warm spot in my heart for, although a few years flew by without my noticing the holiday.
Who else, like me, loves pumpkin pie, a traditional dessert on Thanksgiving? Here in Israel, this dish sounds strange, because pumpkin is familiar to most people as a cooked vegetable - in couscous, for example. So, this year, I searched the Internet for the best pumpkin pie recipe...and now I'm about to invite my family to "dig in".
