TV Election Ads (1988)

TV election ads (1988) Dry Bones cartoon - .
Today's Golden Oldie is from October 1988.

Back then we only had one TV channel in Israel. And it was non-commercial. So when elections rolled around everyone who watched television watched the string of campaign ads run, one after the other. We were a totally captive audience. If you didn't know that we were a totally captive audience with nowhere to switch to, then the cartoon would make no sense.

* * *
These days we've got cable and satellite and commercial TV. The other night the election campaign for the next Knesset began. I switched to channel one (the old, non-commercial station) and dutifully watched the long string of campaign ads run, one after the other.

I think I can say without contradiction that the voters in Israel are probably better informed that those here in the states. I fear, American voters are just a notch above the third world countries. U.S. commentators and pundits would disagree, but sadly its the truth. Only a small minority in this country have any idea what the opposing parties stand for. More people get their views from SNL and other such shows than from the actual news outlets. I'm not Jewish, but have always admired the stuggle of the Jewish people in Palestine.

Ron - maybe... but still, here in Israel, many people will vote for the slogan rather than digging in to find out what the party actually stands for and intends to do. What is also interesting is that in Israel, we do NOT actually vote for a person, but the TV campaign ads too often feature a person, NOT the actual party platform. So - it's all smoke & mirrors whether there or here!

Thanks for your support; hope you have or will come over for a visit sometime!

I predict that nobody will have the appeal of Moreshet Avot's leader in the 16th Kenesset elections (2003), Rabbi Yosef Ba-Gad.

Still, the original Shas election videos were also great, with their massed shofarim.

Suzanne, read your comment with interest--would love to come to your country, but afraid that will never happen. I'm aware of your parliamentary system and that the leader of the majority party along with a coalition he is able to form becomes the PM. It seems to be a fair system. I do however, believe that a divided form of government like we often have in this country is probably better (you know when one party controls the White House and another the congress), that seems to stem excesses. Both system, however have their good and bad points, so it is debatable. What I was refering to in my last comment was the fact that mamy americans are uneducated and ill-informed. Kids graduating from our high schools and yes, even our universities have little or no knowledge of the history of this country---sad but true. Don't believe that problem exists in your country, at least not to the extent it does here. Maybe there will be a re-wakening, a rebirth of American values, I don't know. What I do know is that the recent election in this country was just a step toward bigger government and less personal responsibility. Rugged individaualism has suffered a body blow. The state gets its power from the people, but we are trending in the opposite direction. Ever time a law is passed for the public good it takes away someones freedoms. Recall the old story of the young man tossing a rock through the store window---bad for the store owner, but good for the glass company. Suzanne, the world is seen by most to be gray, but the reality is that it is black and white. There is good and evil and we each must make our choice. I've only recently started blogging, but beginning to enjoy it. Thanks again for your comment.

It's still funny even if you didn't know that. The best advertising is to leave me alone!
