Sherlock Holmes has been used as a symbol of clear, deductive thinking and logical deduction. When I was a kid, growing up on some fairly tough Brooklyn streets, when someone stated the obvious he was put down with a disparaging "No sh-t, Sherlock". In these days of political correctness stating the obvious is often a "no-no".
