For years I've been at a loss to understand the irrational rage against Jonathan Pollard, but American Ambassador to Israel, Richard H. Jones, has just explained why Pollard has been subjected to such cruel and unusual punishment."This is a very emotional issue in the United States," Jones said. "I know he was helping a friend but that's what makes it even more emotional for Americans, if a friend would cooperate in aiding and abetting someone who is committing treason against his own country." The ambassador is saying that the anger is at the "friend" who "aided and abetted" Pollard. The "friend" Jones refers to is either "the Jews" or the Jewish State.There's no need for Jones to apologize. We should be thankful to the ambassador for having set the record straight at last. Jonathan Pollard is not being punished. We are.

Your analysis is close, but it's even deeper than that: what really upsets them is that this "friend" (i.e. us) dared to take matters into its own hands when abused. Pollard only handed over information they were supposed to give us anyway, but had decided to withhold. What they cannot stomach is that rather than waiting to be fed scraps from the master's table, we (through Pollard) help ourselves to what was, by agreement, ours. Is that friendship? Hmmm, I'm sure there is a more accurate name for it...
The sick part of the whole thing is that it is NOT and emotional issue with the US citizens only the US Govt.
Pollard's other mistake was to get caught during the reign of an Anti-semitic Sec of State.
It is so sad because that poor guy should have been let out so many years ago. And if Bibi stuck to his guns, Clinton would have let him go
It should be added that the ambassador used the word "treason". Pollard did not commit treason since he spied for a friedly country. His crime was "espionage".
Treason is a far more serious crime. Those who have committed serious acts of treason against the U.S., including those that were responsible for U.S. agents getting killed and the like, received lesser sentences and/or better treatment than Pollard. Hmm.

Jonathan Pollard turned over information that was vital for the security of Israel. Info ranging from raids and bombing plans to enemy weaponry.
He was allegedly responsible for saving not only Israeli lives but also Americans'.
In my eyes, and those of many other Americans, he should be treated, not as a criminal, but as a Hero!
As I see it, our Government and Israel's, should be ashamed of the fact that this man has not been released for purely Political reasons.

The Pollard case sickens me. But I've been at a loss to explain it. Why on Earth would the man be arrested in the first place? Why would he be denied asylum at the Israeli consulate? Why such a harsh penalty, and a violation of plea-bargain in the process? And why has EVERY American President since insisted that Pollard had to stay where he is... and why has NO Israeli PM stepped up to the plate to deal with the problem, once and for all? Why has the rare American Congressman in the know agreed that Pollard needed to stay locked up, and why have their explanations always seemed inadequate?
The only thing I can figure is that there's something important we don't know. The behavior of everyone -- everyone that ought to know the whole story -- reminds me strongly of someone not willing to tell all they know.
Was he about to spill information that could have identified (and killed) espionage agents under deep cover? Did he catch someone important with his pants down? Did he find out where Jimmy Hoffa is buried? I wonder if I'll ever know.
