Shmendrik: (shmen- drik) n. (Yiddish) a pathetic and foolish small time ineffectual loser, a jerk.
Like the Worst-Dressed list or the Worst Movies awards, our awards highlight the activities of the losers among us.
Anti-Semitism does not grow naturally in free and democratic societies. It requires a great deal of fertilizer. The folks who spread the fertilizer around are providing nutrition for the evil weed of anti-Semitism.- These annual Shmendrik awards “honor” those who have most distinguished themselves by their seemingly unwitting support of anti-Semitism.
The awards are given every year on or about the week of Purim.
Below are this year's "winners".
- First Place - the founder of the "Israeli anti-Semitic cartoon contest"
In response to the horrifying spread of anti-Semitism, anti-Semitic cartoons, and the announcement of an Iranian anti-Semiic cartoon competition, this Israeli shmendrik said; "We’ll show the world we can do the best, sharpest, most offensive Jew hating cartoons ever published! No Iranian will beat us on our home turf!" The Israeli "me too" twit invited artists from all over the world to send in cartoons, illustrations and short comics that express hatred for Jews in the most outrageous way. Background Story

Third Place - Harvard's Dean of Academics
It was only a few days ago that Harvard University released an Elders of Zion-like report about the “Israel Lobby,” co-authored by the Dean of Academics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Mr. Stephen M. Walt. The report alleges that a vast network of journalists, think tanks, lobbyists, and largely Jewish officials have seized the foreign policy debate and manipulated America

It is very hard to pick between those 2, so they both belong. I consider Gorgeous George to be a bit more odious than Red Ken, but it is so hard to choose. Since Galloway spends so much time kissing the tushes of the arabs, I guess he is the worst.

Forget my wonderful country. The UK is no longer an advocate for freedom. I base my judgement on the "march for freedom of expression as long as it doesnt offend anyone in the slightist". If they had a bible in Saudi, it is so offensive and rude that the death sentence is acceptable. If you wear a kippa in Ramala, your saftey is also in question, but its just because you are being offensive.

Unless I'm wrong I thought the reason to hold that contest was to steal the Iranians thunder who announced they wanted to do it.
You may not agree with them, but I don't sincerely believe they hold any acrimony for Jews or Israel.

Yaakov Kirschen, you tragic unfunny bowtied hack. Clearly, the Israeli Anti-Semitic Cartoon Competition was meant to be ANTI-RACIST and ANTI-ANTI-SEMITIC. The competition, with wit and irony, tried to deflate the racist Iraqi version. And - before you claim I'm misreading its intent - I'ved read alot of commentary on the web about this competition and everyone has taken it as I've taken it. Even ultra-pro-Zionists Little Green Footballs understood its satirical intent. You are the sole devoid-of-REAL-humour moron who's accused it of being shmedrikful. And you can't draw.

First place the founder of the Israeli anti-semitic cartoon contest award!? Sounds like Dry Bones needs a lesson in irony.
Second place the Naturei Karta?! Shmendricks are at least well-intentioned fools. The Naturei Karta are neither well-intentioned nor fools. They are evil.
Third place Harvard's Dean of Academics? It's perhaps debatable, but I greatly doubt that the authors succour of antisemites was unwitting.
Jimmy Carter is indeed a shmendrick and should be declared winner following disqualification of the first three place getters.

Red Ken did win last year, but surely he should still appear in the top 3. After all, you have upgraded Jews Against Zionism from third place to second. Downgrade Ken to number 2, put the stupid Dean at the bottom of the list and you can keep the other two.

The fact that these 'nincompoops’ got 'second prize of the “smendrik award” this year' (last year third) does not mean that their (FIFTH COLUMNIST TITLE) would be changed... they should never be allowed to reside in Israel, they should all be booted out and be permitted to reside in Muslim countries only where their situation would surely be improved, by the Islamist mob who would do with them what dhimmi are normally subjected to. Ask what the Copts are going through in Egypt for instance.

I too have a dispute with making the founder of the “Israeli anti-Semitic cartoon contest” on this list. This was the best example of the difference between the Freedoms enjoyed by a democracy in the Middle East and the surrounding countries. Can you imagine a contest by a Saudi newspaper to come up with the best anti-Arab cartoons? Me neither.
On the other hand, I fully support former (thank G-d) President Carter getting a lifetime un-achievement award. I have blogged on his failures before, and look forward to doing it again.
Good selection for shmendriks, especially the first one. I have studied anti-Semitism for years and I just became insensed when I read about this stupidity. I guess if you cannot get attention any other way, join the enemy!
It was a sad day for Israel that this should happen here.

I hate to disagree, but I've seen some of the "Jewish anti-semitic" cartoons and they're actually quite ironic. They are in fact not really anti-semitic cartoons, but cartoons satirizing the anti-semitic stereotyped view. And some are funny too. They in no way resemble what is seen in Arab press or the Iranian contest. Plus, the contest was open only to Jews. Jewish humor, as I understand it, was always about making fun of their own culture. On the other hand, Islamic humor... Ahn, is there one?

I, for one, am totally with you on this award for Amitai Sandy (as well as the rest). I've seen the cartoons at Sandy's site and most of them would easily be at home (and probably will be) in the most antisemitic publications. Whether they were intended to be humorous or not, there's nothing funny about them, or about that contest. It was a disgrace.
I completely disagree with those who consider ex-President Carter a "well-intentioned" fool. He is a fanatic, dyed-in-the-wool antisemitic hatemonger. Of course he is also a fool, but he is anything but "well-intentioned".
The winners for the Shmendrik award were great, however the absolute best was The Lifetime Achievement Award to Carter was sublime! Thanks,

If you are just emerging from adolescense, you might find some kind of humor in the Israeli anti Semitic cartoon contest. I always thought satire and irony were only good when they were witty, biting, and very original. This contest idea was none of the above.
Jokes aside, what is the possibility of peace between Jews and Muslims? Both are deserving of that real but elusive peace and security. Utopia? I think not. We are after all descendants from the same prophet … and should not the survival and wellbeing of one has a leverage on the other?
Is anyone familiar with Patinkin v. City of Bloomington, Indiana (Civil Action No. 07-000482, S.D. Ind.)? I understand that outside counsel for the City of Bloomington, William J. Beggs, whom has ties to the KKK, has successfully manipulated the local court system to oust two prominent Jewish landowners from the town. Why don't stories like this get attention in the national media?

Norman G. Finkelstein certainly deserves a winner's place on the shmendrik awards for his ongoing efforts to undermine the legitimacy of the State of Israel.
Also he is doing a good shmendrik job of propagating the notion of a Jewish 'Holocaust industry' i.e. Jews earning money by turning the sufferings of the Holocaust victims into a kind of Disneyland for tourists to the death camps.
Also he is doing commendable work - for a shmendrik that is - on the impending boycott of Israel by the English universities and other educational institutes.
Condaleeza is the new nominee for the list along with Ehud Omert. What is this "give-back" policy all of a sudden?? HELP, BEBE!

My award goes to Rabbis for Human Rights who in the middle of the terrorists bombings in 2004 sent American rabbis like Margaret Holub of Mendocino to investigate which conditions led to the uprising. Holub returned and helped with the Presbyterian divestment movement. A real looser.
