While profiling can be useful in some instances, when used for transportation security it establishes a pattern, which then can be exploited by terrorists. Better to be suspicious of everyone.
I speak as someone who has trained airport screeners at several airports across the US during the federalization of airport security.
Bluto: Considering your "better safe than sorry" screeners have busted: a suspicious six-year-old (he had a 1 1/2" long plastic gun form a GI Joe doll, which was treated as a weapon), an 80-year-old Medal of Honor winner(it had sharp points, and so he was ordered to throw it away before boarding the plane), and an evil new mother who was forced to drink from bottles of her own breast milk to prove that they weren't poisonous... I don't think you should be so proud of your accomplishments. "Shamed to show your face in public" should be closer to the mark.
How many REAL terrorists could have slipped through while your ay-lite corps of guards are 'evenhandedly' xraying little old ladies with artificial hips for bombs or stripsearching children?
Oh yeah- I forgot... we have to be careful in case one of those Mormon hijackers slips through, or one of the dreaded Quaker suicide bombers- I bet you get a lot of those.

Guns in any form, whether toys or not are banned for reasons that should be obvious, as are various sharp objects. If you have documentation about the breast milk provide it, because Federal screeners are not allowed to make anyone ingest any substance.
How many "real" terrorists could slip by using a traditionally garbed Muslim as a decoy if profiling is used? How much does a bottle of peroxide cost? How many blonde-haired, blue-eyed Muslims live in Chechnya? Was Tim McVeigh a Muslim?
You should be thankful that so many Americans are willing to serve their country for low pay and disrespect from ignorant, whining passengers (thankfully a minority).
Were you aware that 11 out of 12 applicants were eliminated in selecting the original Federal screeners?
As with most issues, I think there's a happy medium here.
"Anonymous," whoever he/she may be, is right. There have been reports of security personnel going overboard, and there haven't been any more Tim McVeigh's since... Tim McVeigh.
But Bluto's on to something, too. It would be very easy for terrorists to use our own policies against us by deliberately disguising themselves so as not to fit the typical "profile."
The idea of no profiling whatsoever is too idealistic, but going too far the other way might be just as dangerous.
It doesn't help to snipe at each other. Screeners are human and mistakes that don't end in hijacked or exploded aircraft are less important.
Profiling is an excellent tool for focusing our resources, but it's a matter of probability, not certainty.
Ultimately, technology trumps screening tedious lines of aggravated passengers, but given time, the screeners either become tired and careless or experienced and effective.
Good training and good supervision improves performance. Bluto, thanks for your work.
You all have valid points. Unfortunately, most of these kinds of issues get taken to extremes; the pendulum swings too far one way or the other, but rarely comes to rest in the middle, where moderation lives.
The reality is that we are all profiling every day, without realizing it, or thinking about it. Don't you suppose I was profiling when I picked out my wife?
Come to think of it, she was profiling too.

I would just like to comment on the "anonymous" comment about it being ok to be racist.
First, saying that it makes sense because someone is Israeli is totally out of line and untrue. It just shows your ignorance and poor up-bringing.
Second, profiling is not necessarily racist. In fact, it's not racist at all. The definition of "racism" is: the belief that one "race" is in some way superior to another. That is not what profiling is. Most times when the r-word is thrown around, it's used incorrectly. Which makes you sound even more uneducated. Do us and yourself a favour and learn the definition before using your vocab words in a sentence.
This one is great - it appears twice under your "favourites". Is it because you like it twice as much?
